Series 3 Aluminium corrosion

Hello everyone, Just after some advice I am part way through a re -chassis of my series 3 but when preparing one of the doors for painting several weeks ago, found a few tiny corrosion bubbles about 25 mm from the bottom of the door . I cleaned them off and filled and smoothed off ready for etch priming. and left untill now But now noticed that some tiny bubbles are back again. Is there any way of treating these corroding areas with any treatment, like you use Kure rust for steel is there anything for alloy, or what is the best cure.Thanks Steve

No cure I’m afraid. It’s a reaction with the steel frame behind the panel.

Use Alacrom and then acid etch. always use an Anti Corrosive Jointing Compound such as Duralac between joints. The problem is always the mechanical attachment.

The only way to stop it is to remove the ali skin from the steel frame, treat the steel and then isolate it from the skin when you re-fit it ...

This can be done by painting a rubberised layer on, but it won't last over long and soon the bubbles will be back, might take a year - who knows ...

Agreed re separation of steel and ally. Also Hammerite do some "special metal primer" that sticks to ally, they sell it in Toolstation which is handy. Paint the steel well so it can't touch the ally, fill the joints with underseal / bitumin / rubber mastic and put some drain holes in. On my doors I put roof flashing on the inside and lipped it over the steel frame. Now if water (condensation or leaks) runs down the inside it goes over the frame not between it and the skin. And its a lot quieter.
