Ok here goes, Ive got an old 200 tdi (1993) with nearly 200.000 on the clock. It has given me virtually no trouble at all for the last ten years but recently a problem has developed with the alternator belt.
It perhaps started 3 years ago when the belt broke, thinking nothing of it I replaced it with a new one and all was well. That belt lasted 18 months before that one broke as well. The next lasted a year and the same thing happened. However in the last few months things have gone from bad to worse. The next replacement broe after 6 weeks and the one after that lasted just a week, breaking on christmas eve!! Put on a replacement and that went after 3 weeks this time and the current belt is already showing signs of wear.
each time a belt has broken the signs are always the same, each "tooth" on the belt appears to have split to make each one individual and a large area will have been totally stripped of all teeth, for the life of me I cannot work out what is wrong. There is little or no squealing from the belt at any time and if it does occur it will be immediately after i start the engine first thing in the morning but last just a second or two.
The tension of the belt appears to be correct and both pulleys seem to be in line. has anyone else encountered this and if so is there a solution. I'm currently contemplating changing the alternator this week in an attempt to cure it.

what make belt do you use ?

i'd bet the alt spindle/pulley isn't aligned correctly

where are ya - post your location and someone might have a spare alt to lend you to prove or disprove me theory

Hello Sean and thanks for the quick reply. I'm a few miles from Maidstone.
Not sure exactly what make of belt it was, the packaging was pretty basic and apart from stating it was a polyvee belt there was no brand name.
Assuming it is the alt spindle is there an easy way to realign it ? Is it possible to place spacers actually onto to the spindle of the alt or does the alt itself need to be realigned ?

Thanks, D

The alt will need tp be re-aligned, however, the important Q is how it could have become misaligned. I would check (without the belt on) that each pulley wheel can turn properly, has the correct V in it and isnt wobbly or damaged.

and with a ruler or straight edge make sure both pulleys line up

If you have had it for ten years and aint changed anything recently, something must be siezed, as mad says spin all the pulleys, and check the crank pulley is not loose.
