Driven for 4 hrs, lights, wipers, a dodge fan that keeps staying on. Battery light comes on, (new battery.) 2 miles later, no steering, extreme heavy. RAC loaded on a flat bed, taken to my friends house in Norwich. Any ideas or advise, now leaving car in mates hands as I travel back to Berkshire on train ready to start work Monday. '53 plate, thxs in advance

More than likely one belt whipped and damaged the other. Before fitting new belts check ALL the pulleys, alternator, steering etc to make sure they spin and run true (no wobble) - you may have been unlucky and a stone entered the engine bay?? Check belt tensioners are also free to spin. Once belts replaced it would be worthwhile checking that the alternator is charging battery with a simple voltage reading on the battery when engine running. Good luck !

Many thanks. Anyone know a good 4x4 in Norwich- as I'm from Berkshire & will be co ordination this over fone, from home?

Is there anything good in Norwich ! ;) Most competent garages should be able to change belts and check pulleys - but stress that you want that done before they fit them !! Also to look for anything obvious, sharp, broken clips etc that could have caused the failure, then a battery voltage check when done - should be 13.8 - 14.3 volts with no heater / lights etc and should maintain 13v + with some stuff switched on. Make sure you call the shots and don't let them do a 'quick job' as you have a long way to come back to sunny Berkshire !!
