Hi, couple of questions regarding the air con compressor on a td4.

Does this run all the time or only when a.c is switched on?
Would removing the compressor or the belt reduce strain on the engine, and would this give any noticeable power increase?

Aircon really isn't needed in Scotland, I just put the Windows down on the day we have summer. Sometimes it lasts two days if we're lucky

.. and would this give any noticeable power increase?
no .. cause the ecu compensates for extra load when the ac is on ..
by increasing the fuelling slightly ..
idle rpm remains the same ..

Does this run all the time or only when a.c is switched on?
when 'on' ..
or when fan set to windscreen or footwell plus windscreen
regardless of the ac switch state

Soz, when I said increase in power I was meaning mpg.
I usually cruise at 60, sometimes 65 when I'm overtaking and I'm getting about 35mpg. It's not a fast motor so I don't drive it like it is, mpg is my goal.
I've got the landy in my garage just now, doing a full service plus brakes / rear diff seals / crankcase breather mod / good clean of the manifold. So just looking for some ideas to increase MPG.

If you're running AT/MT tyres - I should think the biggest improvement you could get would be to run HT road tyres. I don't know how many miles you'd need to do to offset the cost of having a separate set of wheels with offroad tyres for when you do go off tarmac though.

If you do much driving in town or hilly/twisty roads an auto box will not return good MPG.

Absolutely. I lost 3 MPG when I want from standard 16" road tyres to 17" AT tyres. I've just changed to 18" all weather tyres, so I'll see what effect that has on MPG.
