Hi

Just bought a manual 2.5 DSE 1996 got it for a good price and some maintenance jobs to do, like the problem with the off side front window rising at an odd angle and tripping in the "trapped window" alert. I am a novice at vehicle repair but as we want to keep costs down I need to fix simpler things myself.

My question forms two parts that may be (and probably are) linked.

1: Centre fascia vents not outputting air, all other vents, windscreen, L and R and rear vents all working fine.
2: Book symbol and exclamation mark present when vehicle started and air con does not seem to work at all.

Good news was that we had the price dropped as a result of these faults but now have to fix them

Can anyone help?

OK

What sort of Pics do you advise and how do I go about uploading them?

Sorry, newbie questions I know but will get the hang of it soon (the forum anyaway  )

Cheers

Adam

Thanks for the link, what do you think I should take the piccies of, the HEVAC message centre to show the book and excalamation symbol? Evidence of the air coming out the side vents but not the middle (get my missus to drape her hair over the vents in turn :) ) not quite sure what an image would add.

Wow, why didn't I think of that  :D !!

Thanks Adam

Dare I say the most common fault on a Range Rover.. Its either your blend motors sticking and it sounds like your air con unit has no gas in it....this could be a faulty air com pump, leaky condensor, leaky pipes etc.....do a search on these using the search facility at the top of the page ....be warned if its blend motors although they are relativly cheap they are a huge pain in the ass to change....I know a man that is very reasonable in doing the work.

I guess I am :)

Looks like I have a lot to learn. Looking thourgh the workshop manual and the way the e/window is put together, I think the pin linking the right hand side of the cross to the lifter has become loose. But you are entirely correct I will dismantle the door and have a looksee inside and see what is up. The best thing is that the manual shows me what a correct one looks like so it shouldn't be too hard to spot the difference :D

Anyone out there with HEVAC knowledge?

Here is a good place to start ........Blend Motor Diagnosis and Replacement

Also I am sure there is an issue with a low supply voltage to the compressor clutch on vehicles of your age - I also believe there is a replacement loom available to fix. Dont assume it is that though. To see if you have any gas in the system, undo the air con Low pressure fill valve cap and have a quick poke down the hole with a small srewdriver or similar. If you get a "pssst" you have gas, but this method will only tell you you have some and not how much. Also try setting all controls to LO and with the engine running, give the compressor pulley a tap with a meatalic object, if it kicks in (watch your fingers) its a simple fix, switch off take of nut on front of pulley, remove washer put nut back on and enjoy iced air.Best advice is to be methodical. Work on one thing at a time, Is there gas? is the clutch getting power? then move onto the flaps.

Thanks folks, location duly added. Great Link, good old range rovers dot net, fantastic article.

To add to the information my point above about all the other vents working seems to be erroneous, it seems regardless of vent selection the output is always screen based which from the description in the RRR.net page it is either going to be the distribution vent flap or more likely the distribution servo (blend) motor which causes the flap problem.

QUESTION: To a complete novice like myself if it is either of these could you regard this as a suitable task to attempt myself?

I will try the suggestions above and feed back, thanks.

Hell yes! what better way to get to know the ins and outs of your dash. There are plenty of guides to be found - as you have discovered - and although the job is fiddly , it is not difficult. Go on get in there !! and then report your success.

Hello again

Reading the RR.net site and following their pollen filter link as the cause of servo motor failure. Pulled mine out and they were proper black lots of dead leaves in there too. Looked across the open vents that lead into the plenum (workshop manual description) on into the pollen filters and there is the remains of foam and it is through this lack of protection that dead leaves and sticks are finding their way in. Now I know this is not the way it should be and have taken the photo below:

Also found open space in corner behind and below the air EAS box. Anyone know if anything belongs here is it has screw holes etc.

Well to further expound on my novice level, I have tried to follow the workshop manual to look into the passenger door electric window problem and can't even get inside to look at the motor and assembly that is causing the problem!!

Think I will attempt this one first as at least it is mostly mechanical and once I get into the door is looks not to be too complicated. Any advice on that front?

Cheers Adam

easiest way is to upload them to YOUTUBE and then copy and paste the link code into a post. Looking forward to seeing them...........

Yeah and give it a really catchy title - see if we can get it on the most watched list :p :D

First off, the important thing - Is it a Daewoo ?
Secondly, sounds like your window is suffering from nothing more serious than sticky channels. I would suggest getting hold of a tin of PTFE lubricant, I used to use it in my engineering days, and it is as slippery as chuff! A good squirt on the the channel at the back edge of the door, and on the rubber strip that pushes against the glass at the front should fix your problem. You can hear the dry rubber squealing as the window goes up.
This is the stuff ptfe spray lubricant 400ml , router cutters, blades etc, on eBay, also, Woodworking, Manufacturing Woodworking, Business, Office Industrial (end time 02-Aug-08 20:53:01 BST)
