P38A Air bag query

1990 4.0 V8 auto

Suddenly today I got a red "SRS" light and "Air bag fault" on dash. No idea why
Problem is that the MOT is next wek and I dont have much time to fix this.
Will put Nanocom on it tomorrow
BUT
Do I need that light out for MOT.

Supplementary Restraint Systems (SRS) lamps

When testing SRS MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) lamps we are only looking to see if the lamp indicates if there is a fault with the system. If no lamp is present or it doesn’t illuminate then it can’t indicate a system fault, so it can’t be failed. Some vehicles may also incorporate warning messages on dash board displays; these are in addition to any MIL lamps and should not be used as a reason for rejection.

SRS should light up then go out after few seconds of ignition being on it shouldn't be illuminated for mot
sounds silly to say but have you checked the connections under the seats or doesn't your have them

There is a connection under panel below steering wheel. Pitta to get at but on mine once cleaned with spray fault cleared

Thanks for info I wasnt sure if I needed SRS for that year of car.
I havent done anything to test it at all.
Hopefully tomorrow if it stops raining

At least no light doesn't mean a fail

Quick solution until you're able to address properly

Need to take dash off tomorrow

Taking the bulbs out won’t fix the display message, unless you take out all of the display bulbs. Would it still pass if you can’t display mileage etc?

The message isn't a failure and the message goes away when you press the button to cycle thru the display, or at least that's how it is on mine

Usually it's a duff connection, I don't think your car has the side airbags in the seats which are a common cause, so it may be the rotary coupler, does the horn work and if fitted the cruise control buttons?

Finally managed to get nanocom plugged in.
States right air bag is open circuit (Permanent)
Not sure about footering with the yellow wires as dont want a face full of air bag lol

Disconnect the battery for 1/2 hour prior is the paranoid/sensible approach to avoiding setting air bags off

Follow Kermit's advice re battery.
There is a connector to the steering wheel airbag just below the rotary coupler, but my bet would still be on the coupler they are a common failure item.
