Hi all,

I have searched some threads on this, and the result doesn't seem to help me, so i am hoping someone could know as to where i look now.

Whilst driving along the dual carraigeway/motorway and hit a incline whilst at the speed of 75 - 80mph, the engine just seems to give, my revs and engine speed drops to about 40mph, and ends up at a crawling speed. It has happened whilst on a level road once, but that was pushing the vehicle underload quite a bit.

With this the engine management light (with exclamation mark) comes on. Sometimes if the road levels out or i go down a decline it will dissapear and full power is gained after a few minutes, or its a pull over in layby and switch off and back on.

I have read threads and been told possible fuel pump, had it changed and its still the same. You can hear both pumps initiliasing when ignition is turned on.

Its a Td4 04 plate, at 80,500 miles.

Any help, greatly appreciated.

If anyone could help

Hi,

I think it was the L/P pump. I have no idea if its an oem part as the garage changed it.

I have used the diesel injector cleaner, no real change from it.

I have also bought new filters, i.e the turbo vent filter and crankcase breather filter and will change then when they arrive - whether that may make a difference.

Could it possibly be a boost solenoid, or siezed actuating arm that i have seen posted somewhere???

Bought the vehicle a month ago, really want the problem sorted, doesn't do it around town on the hills, only in high gear at high speeds on inclines.

Thanks.

Sound similar to the problems I had few years ago when I got my TD4 - have a look at the link below

Hi, thanks. Had a look, not sure if its the exact sysmptoms i have, as my mil light only comes on when under load in 4th or 5th gear over 3000 revs.

I don't seem to be having starting problems and its never cut out on me.

Thanks anyway, as i will bear this fault in mid, and check my wiring harness anyway.

cheers.

My problems started the same as yours and progressively got worse. Had 3 months of hell with it.
I found out later the previous owner had taken it to the local LR dealer because of poor running and they couldn't find the problem so the guy must have sold it.
Anyway good luck and hope you get yours fixed soon.

did you have oem fuel pump fitted, and how long ago ?

the pattern part ones have a bit of a reputation for not lasting too long.

UPDATE!!!
It's not a good one either. I decided to change my Low pressure fuel pump as everyone advised for piece of mind, and i purchased an oem pump.
Changed it yesterday morning by myself, easy once it's out.

Took it on the dual carriageway near me, and low and behold as soon as i got to just over 70 mph, (near 3000revs) the mil light came on, speed dropped righ off to about 48mph, then the light went out.

Anymore idea's anyone???

Thanks in advanced.

Hi Floydy,

Just a tip. Don't know what crank case filter you have bought, if it's the LR one take it back then go to a BMW dealer and get the crank case breather mod. It's just a straight swap over and never has to be changed again unlike the LR one which has to be changed every service, it's also cheaper than the LR one as well.

Lot's of info on the forum.Very easy to do.

Fuel filter - should have been replaced at 60K - often missed.

My temperature sensor (the one on the short turbo pipe failed) and that gave me limp mode at high loads/revs. Illogical I know but haven't had the problem recur since changing it.

Have you checked all the turbo hoses for splits and leaks?

You need someone to hold the revs at 2500rpm while you check for splits that look like they were made with a Stanley knive.

Check especially the back of the long one where a screw-head can easily chaff a hole, and the underside of the 90degree one.

Good luck.

We had this once which caused us a lot of head scratching, after trying a few things we got the code read and it was giving an over boost fault, we at this point thought vanes sticking in the turbo, however the arm seemed to move ok. We at this point ended up taking the cat off knocking the middle out and replacing, bingo problem solved. So it could be something to try as will not cost anything apart from some time.

Thanks for the advice, checked all the hoses etc, no splits, and it doesn't do it when high revs going up hill in town like at 30mph, seems as though it's high revs at high speeds, and high gears 4th and 5th.

I might buy myself a universal diagonostic checker and go from there, the fuel filter looked newish. Just don't know where to go from here .

For the price of around £30, change the fuel pressure sensor lead, my 55 plate TD4 had similar problems, and was intermittent, no problems at all since I changed it, cheap fix if it works.

Hi, not thought of that, and it's a new idea that's not been brought up before.

Do you have any links for it? Is it easy to change?

Thanks in advance.
