Hi all, I've been having problems with my turbo not kicking in between 2500 - 3000 revs (TD5, reg 2002, auto), I've changed the wastegate modulator and no difference. I just tried driving with the MAF disconnected completely (pipe waggling away) and all was fine again but the thing is I changed it not long ago so is there any way to test it so I don't waste any more money? also I noticed the pipe after the MAF had quite large traces of oil. Is this correct?

Cheers

reconnect the pipe and disconnect the wire to the MAF should go like fook without it (but watch out for the over run as it will rev a tad after you throttle back ;)

Here'a a couple of pics of the oily pipe from after the MAF, should this be the case? and also if it runs smoothly without the MAF can I safely assume that that is the problem hence fork out for a new one? Thing is, when it was put in about 8 months ago it still didn't cure the problem...a guy I knew tried his wastegate modulator and the car worked fine, I bought a new one and popped it in and no difference :-( Very weired.

Are there any members here who live in Hertfordshire who have a TD5 so I can try my MAF in theirs to see if it works?

Cheers
Al

I am in gloucester so cant help with my car but if you still have access to the nanocom you should be able to read the MAF output that should tell you if its working or not. should output up to 5v I think.
check the rave disc and it will give the correct figures

Well, I'm going to test it out at my local indy Landy garage...there's something spooky going on though! I took the blooming thing out yesterday gave it a good clean (thinners on the thin metal wires) left it about an hour. Stuck it back in drove like before, jerking when the turbo kicks in between 2500 - 3000 revs and once the engine was switched off it still sounded like a fan was still on, opened the bonnet and the fan was still - more like the intercooler of something. Unplugged the electrical plug on the MAF and it stopped immediately. Weird stuff, any ideas?

there are some sensors that will default to a fixed value if you unplug them.
from memory they are

MAF
inlet air temp
inlet manifold pressure
and I think coolant temp

but check the RAVE disc for details. Its worth working through them and unplug them to see if your problem goes away

also check all the wiring for damage I checked mine and found three different spots where the wiring loom and chaffed and bared the wires

HTH

I changed the wiring loom about six months ago, 2 x wastegate modulators, and a MAF about a year ago. I think I'll hunt down these electrical sensors you mention and unplug them and see if it helps when I pop them back in. Is it obvious where they are?

Cheers

the rave cd will tell you the locations of them and it will tell you what faults to expect if the sensor is not working and what the ecm replaces their output with if they fail

Its best to read all that stuff before proceeding

Unfortunately we're in the process of moving and most of my stuff is now in boxes and it'll take an eternity to find my Rave CD. Any chance of a screen grab of the right page or is it online somewhere? I tried disconnecting the MAF last night and the "fan noise" lasted at least 4 or 5 minutes once the engine was switched off. I still reckon it's the intercooler but something's not right there...
