I have a red dot roof top unit in my 110 csw , I fitted it when I lived in OZ , what I saw with regard to factory aircon in 4x4 in extreme conditions confirmed what I had decided to do .
The roof top unit is what is used in commercial applications eg on bulldozers , road trains , graders etc .
The basic reasons for that unit choice , in conditions where you want max cooling so does the vehicle , so putting a condensor radiator directly in front of engine cooling radiator not a good idea , most (read all) 4x4 have to turn off aircon to allow enough cooling to engine when operating at high load eg in sand dunes, towing heavy trailer etc, in 40C+ . Some even when on hard surface during long climbs .
Mine will also take in filtered outside air to pressurise the vehicle so that it keeps bulldust out , standard vehicle aircons have to switch to recirc in dusty conditions and so cant pressurise against dust entering elsewhere in vehicle . It has kept vehicle interior cool in 45c+ and its still not at max output , and thats in a csw with a V8 . :D You can get a whole range of systems from red dot, its very good kit . HTSH

Forgot to mention mine is the 9727 unit

Hi, I'm interested in knowing where you put the condensor unit. I'm having a Red Dot unit installed in my 1999 Defender, can't remember the model but its going in between the front seats, is 33k BTU, has two adjustable outlets facing the firewall and two outlets facing straight up, the controls will be facing the firewall, its almost the same size as the cubby box. At the moment the shop is putting the condensor in front of the radiator and in front of the intercooler, I hope this is ok.
Regards, Papdad

opening the windows in Oz is not much of an option , as the wind temp can be so high it will burn you .
papad have answered your pm , as its defo not a ideal location .:)

Also not a good idea as your motor will fill with dust. It gets absolutely everywhere. I believe the Aussies call it "bull dust" but its the same in any dessert or on any African road.

hi ,
does any one know how much the red dot system costs im been looking at compact air con units like they use in caravans etc but prices are pushing £1000 looking for around half that price .
im thinking if i get one of these AIR CON KITS at least i can remove it in the unfortunate event i have to change landy

The red dot system is probably pushing £2.5k+ in UK, for around 500 needs to be s/hand system of some sort eg out of commercial vehicle(Van) HTSH
