i have a 4.6 hse. i purchased it about a month ago and have recently noticed that it was leaking water, i found that the water was coming from the pump. now changed water pump problem solved. car is lusing oil and now the car makes a chuffing sound and when you de-accelerate smoke comes out of the rear of the engine, but just one side. i also changed the plugs on one side and found the back one was carboned up. i presume this could be the head gasket, but is it practical to just change one side?.

any advice would be appreciated..

Rear plugs on V8s carbon up because the engine tilts back slightly. The oil from the rockers drains to this area, then it is sucked in past worn valve stem oil seals.
