Hi Everyone,

New to this but in need of advise. I have a Freelander 99'V 2.0l Diesel which has a huming noise when driving (this is the only way I can describe it) which sounds like the noise a wheel bearing would make but I have checked them and they're fine. In the past few days it has also started to produce a thumping sound when turning full lock, someone said this could be the transfer box???? Would this be responsible for both noises and roughly how much will this cost to repair? Can anyone help.

Hi irlin
I have heard of similar faults being caused but the IRD (intermediate Reduction Drive), from what i have read in LRO magazine this is a difficult diy job. I would suggest having it checked out by a landrover specialist first as these units arn't to cheap but if this is the fault and you want to do it yourself the procedure for replacing it is in the july and august editions of lro, these issues are availible if you email [email protected]

Hi All,

de ja vue big time. My freelander was doing the same thing, turned out to be the propshaft bearings, which in turn had damaged, well ok, knackered the central coupler. I had to get a whole new propshaft assembly. Landrover wanted £1378 for this part, I bought one from a scrapper, less than a year old at £300, took Mr Clutch 35 mins to fit at a cost of £47.50. Bargain or what!

Have the car checked for the simple and less expensive first mate. I had all sorts of knighmare scenarios going through my head and it was so simple in the end.

regards
Slippy

Just had the same shocking news myself here in Chester....same symptoms, diagnose IRD...reckon £1200 to sort out.

Had it for 6 weeks ....only got 36k on it and not even 5 yrs old!

Been on to Land Rover Customer Services.....they are going to raise an AWA (After Warranty Assist) to see whether they will pay a percentage, due to low mileage and FSH.

Anyone had any dealings with these AWA's??
