Evening all i no this has been covered but i'm still a bit lost (dosent take much so be nice lol ) i've been reading a few posts about a rocker cover filter breather and a crankcase breather filter and what can happen if there blocked so i pulled my dipstick out and oil is coming out so i guess mines blocked so are they the same filter, were are they and is there anything else i should be checking?
Thanks for any advice i get Graeme.

i would advise you replace the filter with the BMW one as its about £20 so definately worth it. there are photos and part numbers on here somewhere.
it is situated in a small black plastic circular box just bigger than a tennis ball behind the rocker cover in the cenre area. you will have to unclip the black plastic fuel inlet things to remove it but be careful as they are fragile.

Thank you Ashley is there anything else i should check as i dont think it has been looked after that well ive only had it a few weeks thanks again.

You could check the vcu and put the result in the vcu torque test results thread at the top of the Freelander Forum.

While your playing with the breather filter take off the hoses and flush them through with carb cleaner or old petrol, then rinse them out with water, then dry them out thoroughly and put them back. Do that every time you change the oil, which if you are a bit suspicious about servicing you should do at shorter than recommended intervals to give the insides a decent clean out. Apart from that, if you go round and do the basics over a series of weekends you'll soon get round the motor. Check the brakes, flush the cooling system out, check the VCU like Hippo says etc. Keeping the hoses and pipes clear and having recent fluids that are decent quality does help prevent an awful lot of problems rearing their heads. Gives you the opportunity to get to know your oily bits too. :)

Service sheet below. Right click on it and select save picture as... to save to yer pc.

Also, I'd replace the oils in the rear diff and ird if it was mine.
