Hi everyone,

I am thinking of becoming a landrover owner for the first time. The problem is ive heard terrible stories about the head gasket going.

Is this just the 1.8L petrol engine?

Im after a freelander and have got a relatively low budget, about 3K and there only seems to be landys available with mileage of 90K +.

Should I steer clear?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes

Yes

Get a disco.

Oh and have a look at the faults thread on ere. if ya wanna know what doesn't break on a gaylander. (It's quicker to list the good parts than it is to list the faults)

yes buy a diesel freelander.budget 5 to 600 lbs,for the stuff that needs fixing in the first few months.

many freelanders were bought by complete numpties who hadnt a clue how to fixum, and let small things slide till the problems added up to a complete overwhelming money pit.there are some things that break on all freelanders some you can live with.discos and defenders break too but the people who venture into our humble freelander zone will scoff and ridicule your decision to purchase a gaylander.

WE here in freelander land will also deride your decision to buy a petrol fl,with the exception of 1.8 owners.

if i knew then,ie.when i bought it,what i know now i would remove the prop shart for all but the coldest months, much better 2wd on the road and will cope better than a car off road.

lower tax better, fuel consumption, doesnt rust and contrary to fl haters the door hinges dont rust to **** like their heaps.

but then there are so many better reasons to buy a defender if you need a comercial vehicle.

Thank you for your advice

I think I may be one of these -

complete numpties who hadnt a clue how to fixum

I am not desperate for a commercial vehicle, just started going to festivals and camping alot more and I think a FL would be ideal as I also have a quite large dog.

X-trail has more room in the back fur ya dog.:bolt: and dont have a crap transmission system.

It's a hard question to answer this - i would say that much of it depends on how good you are at troubleshooting and fixing things yourself. Be aware that if you buy a Freelander it WILL have issues, both silly, niggling annoying ones and possibly some more serious ones. However, they have been around for a long time so most of them are common and therefore easy(ish) to fix yourself.

If you're happy with sorting things out yourself, you can get a cheap and pretty decent car for little money. However, if you're not careful you can buy a dog and there will be times that you get hacked off with the blooming thing even if you get a good one. If you can't deal with that, pay more for an X-trail or CRV and save yourself the hassle.
