I need to replace one of the front wheel sensors on my FL1 (it's a 2001 model year), as the speed signal is, let's just say "variable". Thing is, it had been replaced before, and I am wary of cheap, poor quality pattern parts.

A huge range of sensors available on the bay of fleas, ranging from 7 quid, to anything up to 40 times that amount. And staggeringly, they all look the same outwardly.

The question, therefore, is which sensor to get: anyone have experience with a particular supplier?

If I am reading the parts list correctly, the part I am after is SSW100080

Mine's a Teeves Mk20 (chassis 1Axxxxxx)

I might give one of the Rimmer Bros sensors a go - RB is generally pretty good with parts quality, and while I won't be paying a three figure sum for the LR part, I may give one of their aftermarket ones a go... :)

After much procrastination, I've taken the plunge and bough an ABS sensor off ebay - not the cheapest one (these seem to be going for under 8 quid), and not the most expensive. But one with a "24 month warranty". Well, they seem to have confidence. The warranty probably is not worth the photons emitted from the LCD screen of my phone app, but if it fixes the fault, then at least I won't be needing to replace the reluctor ring on the drive shaft. :)

Hi Rob, How is it doing? Can you post a link if any good as I need to buy one now. Cheers

Argh. I'm having a bit of a frustrating time getting the old sensor out of the hub. I may need to dissemble the hub off the car and tap it out inside out.

Any other thoughts chaps?

I've doused it in penetrating oil for now and having a meditation with a cup of tea...

Get two big screw drivers or two small crow bars and use a leaving action (Rapid if needs be) with force. As soon as it’s out by 4mm or so, Get a 19mm open spanner in there and keep the rocking action going until you run out of leverage. Then keeping the first 19mm spanner butted up against the hub. Use another 19mm (Or something close) and repeat rocking lever action. You should get it out enough for you to then to pull it off with your hands.

I'm leaving it to soak in Plusgas overnight and will give it another go tomorrow. The problem is I anticipate the top of the sensor breaking off as I attempt to lever it off! It has shown no indication of wanting to shift even a micrometer so far :(

Mind you, disassembly of the hub is going to be necessary so I can change the wishbones. Plus, it will enable me to have a good look at the reluctor ring - which is the other potential cause of the poor speed signal... Just didn't really fancy doing it today! LOL

Yep that happened to me once. Had to take hub off and use an air chisel to get it out!

Confession to make: it was lashing it down yesterday, so I sat down and read all about everyone else's project Land Rovers LOL

Still, that just means a little longer stewing time in Plusgas...

I didn't take a picture, but the problem is that the only thing that I can get a purchase on is the plastic end piece that rotates freely of the metal body of the sensor. I doubt it'll take much force, but will give it another go. The other problem is that there is insufficient gap to get any of my mole grips onto the body of the sensor. A small pair of pliers will get on it, but offers little purchase and no sign of any movement whatsoever - rotational or longitudinal. :(

Welp you could always snap it off and chisel it out with a screw driver and dig the bits out carefully. Otherwise release the brake calliper and disc. Unclamp the hub at the top releasing it from the lower strut and you might be able to knock it through without taking it off the wishbone, but suspect it would be easier if you did.

My ABS has started working again on its own after a big clang off a kerb. I think I have a loose connection or something needs bolting down a bit more. I suspect also the new front suspension that is making the clanging sounds at low speed means I need to tighten something up as well, so it all might be related.

Thanks - I suspect that the end will snap off anyway - so will come to that as and when!

And having inspected the lower ball joint, the rubber gaiter has failed and it is knocking, so that is a job I need to do anyway...

Perfect, Have you done one before?
