I have a problem that is driving me nuts on my wifes Freelander 2 2010 TD4. We have a problem with the infamous three amigos (and other electrical probelms which all started at the same time). LR have looked at the ABS module and say it is the cause of the fault. Lack of comminication with other electrical items on the same CANBus system. We have sent the cars original ABS module to ECU Testing and they say there is no issues with it and it works all in order. Whilst the cars original ABS module was away for testing we replaced it with a 2nd hand unit. This unit works fine and no faults were being shown. Simple (or so you would think.) = Replace the original ABS module with the 2nd hand unit and happy days. Not happening im afraid. Here comes the problem....... the working 2nd hand ABS module now in the car cannot communicate with the car as it is programmed to the original doner cars VIN!!!! Aaaaghhh. Does anyone know if there is some tecnical genius out there who can wipe the 2nd hand ABS ECU units memory and thus allow the LR test equipment to reprogram the working 2nd hand unit to my cars VIN and everyones happy. ECU Testing deny the original ABS unit is faulty and remain steadfast in their assesment of it

Your quite right about the VIN being a one time write to the module and the tech cannot fit the 2nd hand unit to the car becuase of this as it wont accept my cars VIN/chassis number. There must be someone out there who can wipe the ABS module memory and we can start all over again and re-program to 2nd hand unit to fit my car!
The following is what I sent to ECU Testing and the LR tech got from his testbook:

Year
: 2010 , Engine Size: 2179
Part No: AG9N 2C405 CA
Fault information: Many elctrical issues that vary but ABS/TC/ECU and parking brake are lights permanatly lit
Is the fault intermittent: Yes
Intermittent fault description: Not specified
Have you checked for fault codes: Yes
Can you communicate with the component: Yes
Are any fault codes stored: Yes
Fault Codes: C0061-28-LATERAL ACCELLERATION SENSOR, U0428-61-INVALID DATA FROM STEERING ANGLE SENSOR, C0082-49-BRAKE SYSTEM MALFUNCTION INDICATOR, U0415-62-INVALID DATA FROM ABS MODULE, U0415-86-AS ABOVE, U0121-00-LOST COMMS WITH ABS MODULE, U0415-81-INVALID DATA FROM ABS MODULE, U0121-87-AS ABOVE, U0415-94-INVALID DATA FROM ABS MODULE, U0121-00-AS ABOVE, P1799-00 -CAN TRANSM CONTROL MODULE CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION,
Have you tried to clear the fault codes: Yes
Do the fault codes return: Yes
Fault Codes Return when: SHORTLY AFTER START UP & ENGINE RUNNING. REPLACEMENT USED ABS MODULE HAS BEEN TRIED AND DOES SOLVE THE FAULTS BUT THIS CANNOT BE RE-PROGRAMMED TO THIS CAR VIA LAND ROVER T4 TESTBOOK.

I would email Pat at Gap Diagnostics in Canada. They make a very clever diagnostic tool called an IID. It is capable of doing stuff to the ECUs that LR can't. So it's definitely worth a try. If it will do what you need, you'll need to buy the tool, or find someone near you with a "traders" version of the tool.
It's definitely worth an email;)

I will look them up. If I can find someone nearer to Lancashire with this tool I'll see if I can get access to it. There must be someone in the UK that re-programs ECU's and clears the manufaturers original non-volatile memory to allow a part to be re-used. Many thanks for the information.

Have you tried recalibrating the steering angle sensor and yaw/lat/long sensor?

What's wheel alignment like?

The U codes for invalid data are stored in other modules as the ABS doesn't know all the data it needs and sends a message on the CAN to reflect that.

That's why I'd start with the hard faults in the ABS system (c codes) and not the "soft" faults (u codes)

Hi, Given the 2nd hand ABS modulator we obtained did not display any fault codes at all when it was connected (it just wouldnt allow itself to be reassigned to the car itself) would this not validate that the original ABS modulator was the problem and not any other modules or any part of the car?

Hi, I've got exactly the same problem as the above, does anyone know about replacing the abs module for a second hand one?
