We all have them - the simple job that goes tits-up, today was my turn.

Track-rod ends, i noticed they were buggered a while back, gaiters ripped and red-rust visible so i bought a nice pair of QH ends and new clamps ready. I thought the worst part of the job would be splittting the ends from the arms but a clump with the hammer and splitter had that done, the damper came off easily too.

Then the luck changed. Two hours later and there was no way i could remove the ends from the tube or even slacken the adjuster sleeve. I tried oil, heat, 36" stillsons, practically my whole arsenal of "shift-it" tools:D It reached the point where the tube was being wrecked by the clamping and twisting.

A new tube and adjuster is on the way, should have got it from the start i guess:doh:

Naturally while under there i had a look-see, turns out one of the rear anti roll bar joints is loose and fretting in the axle bracket, the nut is seized of course and the joint just spins. I've got it soaking but no doubt i'll be needing a new joint soon:( might have to cut this one off.

Also noticed the clutch fluid is low, checked about 6 weeks ago so its a leak but i cant see it dripping, top end is dry so must be damper or slave, another job coming up:rolleyes:

I love Sundays, the day of rest:rolleyes:.

So far today I have-
finished stripping the interior out of the rear ready to weld the inside of the c pillars and rear wheel arches. Taking out the dicky seats is a pain!
replaced the stupid little spring in the n/s/r door,
taken the actuator out of the o/s/r door

and now am about to look for the coolant leak in Mrs D's MGTF while the Disco's battery is being charged.

At least the Disco is made out of meccano and has a proper engine. The MG has to be completely dismantled to find/fix anything.

Still what else is there to do on Sundays?

Mrs D has just reminded me I need to put the dinner on and cut the lawns!!!

After beating the crap out of the track-rod, i was thinking of plenty of things i'd rather be doing. I hate being beaten by a lump of rusty metal:mad:

Turns out the damper is shagged too (see other thread) so i've ordered one of those too. Job gets bigger and bigger.

Well i had a good day, decided to fix my seized diff lock, completely removed the mechanism and got it on the bench, a bit of heat & plus gas got it moving, then a good clean up and grease. I even made a rubber cover for the end of the rod that gets stuck in the ally bearing to stop any more damp/dirt getting in. Works a treat.

I am sure my bad day will come but it was not today:D

i had a clearout.

I decided to take the drivers door card off and try to WD40 the door handle from the inside. Had a small amount of success, now I only have to pull the handle 2 or 3 times to open the door instead of 20-30 followed by scrambling through the passenger door.

One thing I did notice is at the bottom of the door skin (sorry no picture) there is a chunk of 2"x4" (about 6-7" worth) screwed in to the bottom, which would account for why my window doesn't go all the way down. I was reluctant to remove it, so I simply turned it round to give the arms more room. Now the window goes down an extra inch, but when it gets to the bottom of it's range of movement it makes hell of a noise! So if this chunk of wood wasn't there, would there be anything?

I hate that when you start something simple you end up uncovering another thing (or 7)...

Exactly!

I started off with track-rod ends, now need a complete new track-rod,
noticed the damper was biased, new damper on the way,
noticed a rear anti-roll arm was fretting, probably wont tighten so a new one here,
noticed the clutch was leaking, probably slave cylinder might as well bung a damper on too,
noticed an oil leak on one rear wheel, gawd knows what that'll need,

You can go from lovin' the motor to wondering "Why am i doing this?" and back to lovin' it all in a couple of days, thats the charm of landy's i guess.

to stop the window winder winding the window off the end of its travel.
the clunk is probably this happening.

do you know?
wd40 is a penetrating fluid, and not a lubricant?
as it penetrates and frees everything off, it degreases it all too!
oil it all afterwards!
its why when you wd' summat, you have to increasingly more often wd' it again and again as it seizes back up.....

I think what you need to look at is the window channel This is the piece of metal which is attached to the bottom of the glass, the window regulator fits into it. They are known to rust and disintegrate. Quite often people resort to DIY solutions. You may also need to look at the fixed channel attached to the inner of the door just in case. I've just replaced mine, windows work perfectly now.

3-in-1 is a better spray oil than WD.

1-2-1 is a cheap knock off I got from the place next door to where I work, looks the same. Seems to work alright though.

Cheers for the heads up on the window channel Alex. I'll look at that next Sunday morning, so I don't digress too far from the original thread!

Re: your anti roll bars. One end of mine disintergrated and forced its way onto my axle, leaning on the break cable. Not a good situation to be in. I tried absolutely every trick in the book to remove ARB legitimately. No luck. Bend it back and forward a few times, if one end is gone, the other wont be far behind. Just pull it off. I never noticed the difference after taking both front and rear ARB's off. One less thing to fail

I did notice the brake pipes and ABS cables touching the links, bad positioning, i'll move them a bit.

I've got new links and bolts coming now so the ARB is going back on, when i get the damn thing off that is. I've undone the links from the axle but the two big bolts that hold ARB to links are proving to be bast&*ds.

I'll sponge a breaker bar tomorrow and try that, if not ill grind the buggers off.

Breaker-bar says no, angle-grinder says yes:) The ARB is now refitted with lovely new links, bushes and bolts, job done.

The track-rod, now that saga is continuing. It turns out that the kit that was advertised for the rod has a left and right handed joint, but my rod needs two right handed ones:mad::mad:

I will be out shopping tomorrow for another joint, i hate being fecked about especially when its mail order and too close to weekend for re-order.

Oh well at least the back end is happier i guess.

Three shops and none had a QH track rod end to match:mad: So now i've got one side with a nice QH end with grease nipple and the other with an AllMakes end with no nipple:(

Guess which one will fail first:rolleyes::rolleyes:

If it stops raining, i'll get the damn thing fitted tonight:D
