Hi all

As allays im a little lost here i have two ideas but would like confirming or correcting?

A family member has a Disco 300tdi and its been brought to me for repair lol as allways ;)

Problem

After driving for say 20 to 30 mins the exhaust starts bellowing white/grey smoke everywhere. (and there is alot)

What i know

so far there has been a smell of oil when running, the car has had alot of work done all over before they purchased it 3 months ago, also the driver changes gear at high revs, i actually mentioned whey they were going about with me today seeing if it would go again.. it diden't while i was in. but just had them back on the phone with the problem by the time it got back home.

what i think it is

Just guessing from what i have read on this and several forums its either the turbo pipes air intake or the gasket but i've had problems with either so its all new to me ;)

Any help appreciated

Dunno if its the same for landy's,but when i split my boost pipe on my modeo in france I could fog all 3 lanes of the motorway-really bad-had to limp back to the port-So i would check all your pipes for splits-my split incidentally was only small on the inside of a bend

I was thinking that but with it taking 20-30 mins to start i would have presumed a problem with the pipes would be from the start..

But thanks the car will be here in the morning so i will check the pipes over then.

Hi Wappy, there are some things you can check before completing the diagnosis.

1. Does the header tank lose any coolant or get over-pressurised?

2. Re the cabin heater, when heat is selected, once the engine has warmed up, do you get plenty of hot air?

3. Is there any mayonnaise under the engione oil filler cap or in the header tank?

4. Is there a loss of power when the white smoke arrives?

You would normally get black smoke if there is a turbo hose blown.

coolant still at correct lvl but not sure about the pressure

2. Re the cabin heater, when heat is selected, once the engine has warmed up, do you get plenty of hot air?

YES

3. Is there any mayonnaise under the engione oil filler cap or in the header tank?

NO

4. Is there a loss of power when the white smoke arrives?

NO (carries on driving normally)

while asking them they have just told just be before the smoke starts they smell buring oil

n thanks biglad

Thanks Red.. i hope not. but i've just read a bit more on it all and i get the picture that they would have a loss of power but there not (questions above by biglad) so could that point to something simpler?

Could still run ok on three cylinders if the head gasket isn't too badly blown. Id take head off as it's a simple job to do (OHC) so no timing issues.

well i can go down and buy a new set of gaskets and get them changed. its only £40, what would i be looking for (just a warn gasket) and change and its fixed? and is it acase of just taking off the rocker ect and working my way down?

Dunno about a Landie, but I had (many years ago) a company car Nissan Bluebird ZXR Turbo, which blew the turbo .. clouds of white smoke .. ;)

Just an observation ...

Just been to see about a gaket and im now totally confused as i was told it would need re scimming? other wise there would be no point in replacing them? so again im totally confused lol nothing new there then. lol

the head will need skimming if its warped. Once you have removed it you need to get it pressure tested and checked to see if it is true

the car has just arrived now i can clarify alittle

1'st the smoke has a blue tint to it so that would explain the oil.

2. we popped the bonnet and i noticed there was oil by the yellow cover cap and oil being forced out by the rocker gasket..

i touched the cap and it then sounded like a old bloody kettle (hissed)

3 the engine temp via the dash was normal!

included where some of the leaks on smoke on idle.

as it takes 30 mins for the oil to build up pressure that could explain the delay in the smoke

Do you know i hate not been told the full story....

I have now been told it was in a acident the other day (18th) a car drove into the back of them when it was checked (given the once over by a garage) they said its only the exhaust back box that needs replacing.

Could a shunt to the exhaust cause a problem further up the engine with these symptoms.

Regards Wappy

P.s. i've searched the forums and the internet and am at a loss to what this problem is. as when i go with head gasket other things seem to contradict them eg power loss, coolant ect ect ect and due to the cost i'd like to eliminate cheaper options first.

i have them hopefully taking it to a 4x4 place near me tomorrow. but there talking as tho it might go down as insurance if it could be caused by the bump

Right turned out there problem was a collapsed oil pipe and that was building up the pressure, but due to how long they left it they had completely screwed the turbo too. ;)

hope that helps some one!

Thanks for all the help

Wappy
