Hi All,

Well, I found the a/c compressor pulley bearing rough and noisy and as the a/c hasn’t worked since I’ve had the car and has no gas I replaced the compressor with pulley ERR6493 and the belt, which was also knackered, with a Contitech 7PK1715 as per a TD5 with no ACE and no a/c. All good so far but this has left a big hole where the compressor was and everything behind exposed.

Was there ever some form of shield or blanking plate which replaced the compressor in non a/c cars or was this how they left the factory?

Thanks All for your wisdom.

Have a look at some defender td5 engine bays, defenders with a/c are pretty rare, so you should be able to see quite quickly what lr did if anyhting?

Thanks, hadn't thought of that. I've just found a couple of fuzzy pictures on the net and it seems LR just left a hole! It just looks odd, but will make changing the rotary filter easier! I'll see if I can find a real Defender though.

Cheers.

Hi, it's funny I have messaged about 10 people on the bay of fleas breaking D2 TD5's, first asking if it had A/C then if it did, did they have the condensing fan available but all the replies came back with "didn't have A/C fitted". I looked at as many D2'S as I could at Billing the other week & I didn't find one without A/C ! What's going on is it only D2's without A/C that get broken ? As you've removed your compressor I was going to ask you if you still wanted the condensing fan but as it also doubles up as an extra eng. cooling fan I wouldn't be that cheeky:):):):):).

Well, last summer I removed the radiator grill for another reason and found the condenser fan seized and its fuse blown! Then I saw the corrosion at the P-clip and measured at the pressure switch which said low pressure so I decided getting the A/C running was going to be more than a 2 minute job (I'm not too concerned, but wifey doesn't like the windows open in case something with more legs than her flies in). So sorry, my fan is also dead!

Rockauto in the US could supply the VDO motor when I last looked and shipping rates to the UK were quite reasonable, if I remember right. I mat still have the details somewhere.

Cheers.

Yeah if you can dig out the details of the motor out that would be great & much appreciated.
It's no surprise the fans seize as unlike most vehicles when you put the A/C on the fan or fans start, like my FL1 but the D2's fan doesn't cut in until the outside temp reaches 28 degrees & the vehicle speed is below 50mph (which lets face it, 28 degrees & above doesn't happen too often in the UK).
As I said it also cuts in as a cooling fan for the eng. in fact the w/s manual calls it an eng. cooling fan as opposed to a condensor/condensing fan, so it might be worth repairing/replacing it for that operation alone.

The fan motor is a VDO PM9261 and the RockAuto link is https://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/vdo,PM9261,a/c+condenser+fan+motor,6920 however it seems to be out of stock at the moment! I think it fits a number of American trucks, so there should be a good chance of it coming back into stock, or available elsewhere.

I did know something about the way the fan is used. That probably explains why is seizes up so often. I had planned to repair mine sometime....

Cheers.

Hi, I must thank you for the link for the fan motor. They were out of stock when I used your link but left my email address to let me know when they were back in stock which they duly did last Friday 13th. I ordered it & it turned up today (& that was using the cheapest postage option) I'm impressed the whole lot was £77. bargain in my eyes, many thanks again :).
