i have this problem!! it makes a eeeeeeee noise and i usally find a good wiggle or hard push solves it. very strange?? i was actually planning on going to fix mine in a moment will strip it down and find the cause and get back to you

Hi, when the problem occurs and the radio makes a funny noise take a careful look at the screen. Do you notice that the display is still working but is hardly visible because the back light has gone off?

I think this is because of some sort of volt drop, maybe a short to earth or loose connection.

Anyways after taking my radio out I found this...

This could have been shorting to earth and dropping the voltage onto the radio, anyway I taped it up seemed to work okay but I will let you know how it goes because you know nothing goes wrong when you are home and can fix it, always happens when your driving.

It looks like the remote on cable to switch the amps on. Now I don't know a great deal about the Range Rover wiring but a usual amp needs 12v to switch on, so what you do is you take a cable from the headunit directly to the amp, so that when the headunit is switched on 12v is sent to amps and turns them on, when the radio goes off the amps do too, saves the battery. If this was shorting out then could make the amps play up, which would explain the funny noise.

Hopefully it is as simple as that! Check yours, see if you have any obvious shorts.

hi , ive had similiar problem for last 4 weeks have now removed it and sent for testing . am also having amps and speakers tested as all my interference is there wether the engine is on or not ????? i have been told that it possible the dsp is faulty ??? am having this checked too i will hopefully have an answer by wensday and will report back to you the result ,,,, cheers mozz:):)

right well the problem seemed to be a bit better last night, i got away with it for about 2 hours but then it started occurring again. still, a good push on the fascia near the volume knob solved it. will take radio itself apart and have a proper look.

As per previous posts, I have a very similar problem...after about 1 1/2 - 2 hours, my radio stops working and the dispaly says "Telephone".......... obviously a feature that I do not have connected, if I push slightly on the radio, it goes back to normal mode, my thinking is that after that length of time driving the back of the dashboard gets nice and warm and something is expanding somwhere and shorting something else out......(nice and technical I know......), I have been unable to look at this yet, as I have not been able tofind anything the correct width to put in the holes to slide the radio out ( not really put much effort into looking to be honest......), the other thing is if I switch from Driver to spatial etc on the settings, I get a really loud random static sound from the door speakers.......

I have noticed this same problem, you have to push the front panel in hard- mines the number 3 button which sorts it out for a few miles.... would love to know what is causing it...I did actually take it out to have quick look at the wiring, which looked, hmmm like confusing so i shook it a bit and did hear something small ratting around, but didn't have the time to open it up, I think it has to be a dry joint somewhere. BTW it is a HK system.
Anyone else done open surgery on their clarion?

i had similar prob would work fine then would cut out and the display was hardly visable then just as it went off would come back on 3 times louder and blow you out the car lol took it to a garage they told me it was fried so i changed it to a clarion but kept the old one not looked yet but not convinced it was fried hope to put it back in oneday looking forward to your findings may help me good luck

hi ,i said i would report back so here it is . first i had the radio bench tested all fine ! secondly had subwoofer amp tested .all fine ! thirdly had am/fm div amplifier tested this is located at rear right side panel.on touching this the radio crackled and then was great for rest of the day , my technician suggests that this be replaced , cost about £20.00 he suggest that either bit of damp in it or leads were loose ..all in all havin no problems at moment ,so hopefully all is resolved , mine is original radio and original wiring on plugs at the dash facia. it is the full harmon kardon system

hi steve , 4 hours later after the last post . well i thought it was all sorted but to no avail just been shoppin an its off again ,, spoke to my fella he says , process of elimination now that the radio - radio amp - subwoofer amp - am/fm amp booster all ok ....so now its a process of checking all door speakers and their individual amps in the doors. so by that time everything in connection to the incar entertainment has been checked so im sorry for giving you the wrong solution but alas by time ive finished we shall have the answer i hope..will keep you in the loop meanwhile enjoy your rangie ..keep the faith manchestermozz ....:):):)

problem must be with headunit though mate, otherwise a good push on fascia wouldn't sort it. tbh sounds like either an earth leak or a loose connection into the back of the radio.i said i would take it apart and report my findings but havent had chance. i am going to tape up the mounting case to eliminate the chance of a leak down to earth through that.

Did you manage to fix this problem?

right sorry for the delay my radio started working okay(ish) it would do it once or twice but then sort itself out, i decided i could live with that and didnt bother trying to fix... anyways its back to its usual self again so i am currently fiddling with it as i write this post, will let you know if i find anything :)

If it's a Clarion head unit, send it back to them, For a fixed fee, they''ll completely sort it with a new display etc if it needs it. For an extra £25, they'll also fit an input lead you can use with your iPod/MP3 player etc. Brilliant service. Basic cost is around Eighty quid probably now. Had mine done a couple of years ago (had similar symptoms) and it's been fantastic ever since.

Yup, took it apart and couldn't see anything obvious... It's so annoying, I can only assume its something to do with the connector that connects the front screen to the unit but I oiled it up for a better connection and still having the same problem.

I called the clarion repair centre, they told me the problem is with the 80 pin volume connector. 78 quid for the fix and an extra 20 if you want a mp3 fly lead. Gonna send mine one off next week.
