I have 2 lr disco's..one 97 that was starting fine, then had an overheating prob, so I replaced the headgaskets, etc.. now the starter just clicks....the 1996 I had just replaced the starter..was working fine for about a week, then nothing..not even starter click..any ideas? thanks...fuel arrives at the rails..so pumps should be ok....sparks at plugs..just no starter..the 97 hasn't turned on since the head job..the 96 just went out..made a gurgling sound before shutting down completely..any ideas?

the one that clicks needs hitting with a hammer or rock the vehicle while it's in gear.

The one that is silent you need to wiggle the ignition fee wire on it or re-fit it if it's fallen off.

Don't you just love Landys .. 'it it wiv a 'ammer, or just wiggle it and all your woes will go ... ;)

hehehe...you are right..I do need to hit it with a hammer!..no, I love to hate this piggy! I'll check the leads...there is a oil leak on the timing cover, which blows onto the starter and covers it in oil after awhile...would this explain the starters' deaths? one mechanic told me that kills the starter..another told me it didn't matter...hmm..any knowledge you feel like sharing is appreciated! thanks..and ratty, I do like your "keep it simple" attitude!..thanks
