:welcome2:hi new to all this so need help:confused:replacing my lt230 box :p just bought a discovery tran box do i need new seals and change the oil or can i just put it straight on :confused:

To start with this job is a pain to do, but i managed it with a chain hoist a very painful day.

I guess you don't know the history of the replacment transfer box, so to be on the safe side i would replace the seals (3 of them - one input and two output)

The input one you can only do with the box off, the output ones can be done later if needed.

As for the oil - again if you know it has the correct stuff, and is not contaminated then you could just keep whats in it

BUT

As the seals are a couple of quid each, and a couple of bottles (2 1/2 L i think) will be around £8 each - i would drain it out, put new seals on and then fit it, to save yourself some hastle / broken box in a few weeks time - I left the old seals on mine when i replaced it and a few hundred miles down the road the oil came dripping out. Changing the seals is a very quick job with it off the landy - see busters photo guide

Its also SLIGHTLY lighter with the oil out.

As for the swaping job, you need to remove the round cover on the end to get access to the input shaft, which you need to remove before removing/installing the transfer box (if you have a power take off fitted you may find that the gears rear bearing is held in place by a frame)
Once this is out its just a mater of undoing the prop shafts, and then the mounting, and then removing it. Then do the same to put it back on in reverse

While you have the input shaft out, check to make sure it has a hole drilled through it - if it does not then i would think about getting a 'Cross Drilled Shaft' as they allow more oil to get to the splines on the output shaft from the main box and prevent it wearing out (have a look at it when you take the tarnsfer box off as this is a common failure and causes you to loose all drive - the splines should be symetrical on both sides of the spline - if there bent/twisted a bit then this is a sign of impending failure - a SMALL amount of wear is acceptable, but not too much - i'm afraid if it is on its way out it is a major job requiring the main box to be removed and stripped down,

I used a coulpe of bits of 2X4 to build a frame inside the landy and attached a chain winch to the frame, and put some rope around the box to remove it, and then used the same principle to put it back on - otherwise it can be a real pain - some say you can do it with two people under it but as i was on my own up the side of a welsh mountain when the old one exploded (as the output seals were nackered and the oil drained out on the M6!) i used this method.

The oil you need for the transfer box (or diffs) is EP 80/90 gear oil (non synthetic) - If you are channging the main box oil you need to put ATF (Auto Transmission Fluid) in despite the fact that it is a manual box

I put anohter defender one back in as that was the only one if could get at the time, so i don't know about the disco one.

Lots of people on here have done this as it reduces the revs when cruising on the motor way. It also gives you slightly less acceleration (but thats not usualy a concern as it was sh*t at that anyway)

I had to do mine so to me it was worth the effort.

I'll have to leave the 'is it worth it' to somebody with a 300tri who has done this

nice one is it worth all the effort? much quiter is it and how much mph do you get

it's the best mod you'll ever do to a depender

chap above made it sound like very hard work - it really isn't, hardest bit is probably getting the floor plates off !

get some 150mm ish long bolts to replace the tranny box mounting bolts so you can slide the box away from the main until the shaft clears

then get a few inflatable camping beds (or the frame depicted in the Wm and a bottle jack) under it, blow to up (put some ply on the top to protect them) then ease the tranny box off - then let the inflatables down

then reverse to refit

another option is a length of bar in the foot wells and a strop twisted round the tranny box to raise/lower

don't fit cheap seals

work smart not hardbox

try taking the main gearbox out complete with transfer box-****ing heavy.

Was not trying to make it sound hard, was just making sure he know what he was going to be doing.

BTW is is f*ckin hard if your doing it on a 20 degree sideways slope, in the middle of a muddy path running next to a mountain hut in (i stand corrected from the first post) the Lake District, 2 miles from the nearest road, when the temp is -12 and you don't have 3 air beds etc, and you have just got the first box you could find on a Sunday with 350 miles to drive to get home :D :D

Sounds like similar conditions when we did Ryders Transfer box on his driveway. I have changed about 8 transfer boxes and the only way I can do it is on my own, people helping usually makes it a pain, After changing the input seal, lift onto chest extend arms feel it onto the gearbox output shaft slide on in one motion as to not damage the newly fitted seal. You can mess about with chain hoists till the cows come home the easiest way I have found bar ramps and a gearbox hoist is to do as above.

forgot to add that i fitted a 300tdi disco box, worth it although be careful if like me you yhen fit bigger tyres as my speedo is now 10% out, not the good way, when speedo says 50mph actually doing 55.

ok, so
will a discovery trans box from a TDi200 go on my defender ?... i've already put the engine in. have gearbox spare and thinkin this will be a nice job in the summer.
also, is the gearbox the same aprt from bell houseing ?, may be a good spare one day

yes the tranny box will fit without any modification

no the GB will not fit without some modification
