Hey guys,
So it has come to my attention this week that the 1986 90 that I purchased 3 weeks ago has a bit of a shady past that was not revealed to me upon buying her. It’s if no worry to me either way, but I thought I’d start a thread for her to document what happens as she and I move forward. Her past is more Dodgy than I had been led to believe, but I don’t care, and neither does she. She is happy to be on the road knowing I will give her the love she needs.

Well for starters she has a good deal of frame rot, that I can cut out and fix for now, but would eventually like to replace the chassis. She was originally Red not green. A good bit of welding has been done on the bulkhead from what I can tell. The VIN tag under the hood has nothing stamped on it other than the VIN number. The interior is in fantastic shape and the seats are like new. I think at some point she went through a partial rebuild but whoever did it focused on the outward appearance but should have started at the chassis and gone from there. I got a smoking deal on it though so I’m not worried about her flaws. Nothing that time, money and elbow grease can’t fix.

How much was it?

To be honest it just sounds like an old land rover.

I paid 3,000USD for her. 3K for a 90 that runs great, drives and stops well. All electrical works except the dome light and the highbeams. I think I did OK for the price.

So I’ve been fighting fuel delivery issues the last couple weeks and think I’ve finally found the culprit. Mine has the 2.5 petrol. I replaced the carb because it was leaking around the throttle shaft bushings. I also replaced the pump and filter, and added a secondary clear filter just ahead of the carb. I’ve had to pull the carb now twice to dismantle and clean, even though both filters are clean but crud is still getting into the carb. I’ve realized that the flex tube from the air filter housing to carb is deteriorating from the inside and just plugging it up. I’ve since ordered an air cleaner set-up that’ll bolt right to the carb top and ditch the stock filter set-up. Other than these hiccups, she runs great, as long as there’s no junk in the carb.

Going by what others in the US have paid for their Landies, you’ve had yourself a bargain! That would be a bargain over here too, to be honest. Hope you get her running nicely soon .

If you put a free flow filter on it you might want to tune the carb. It might run a bit lean otherwise.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I got a fair deal given what I paid for what I got. She’s not perfect and I knew going in she would be a project. I’d much rather have something I can build into what I want rather than buying something built by someone else, ya know?
I’ve tuned the carb after every cleaning and she runs perfect until some little piece of debris makes it’s way into the bowl. I know the 2.5P isn’t as desirable as a diesel and have thought about eventually swapping for something else, but when she is running right she’s silky smooth and I’d kind of like to see how far this engine will go. Any of you guys had good luck with the petrol engines and making them reliable? I understand they need lots of love. I come from and air cooled VW background so I know the give and take it requires to keep finicky cars happy.
