4.6 hse on LPG - How many MPG?

have been looking for a p38 lately originally wanted a 2.5dse but having spent the weekend looking at a dozen or so different ones I am now considering a 4.0 or 4.6 HSE (due to the better specs) either one already gas converted or one to get converted - I have heard a few horror stories about the engines running too hot on lpg, blown gaskets etc.

what's the average mpg for a gas converted 4.6HSE? - I would be interested to hear anyone's experiences.

also is there any problem getting insurance for an lpg range rover

just had mine converted (P38 1997 HSE) by duel fuel in woking, great job, just make sure you have your stereo code ;-)

MPG: about 10-20% less than what you do on petrol and ofcourse that depends if you leave it in sport mode and a heavy foot... but at 36 quid to fill a tank who cares. Going to the southern alps next week for two weeks can let you know what she does on a run. Driving in london I got 240 miles from a tank of petrol and about 200 from lpg but I think I am stil running it in and have enjoyed using the v8 a bit more.

No signs of over heating, in fact smooth as, I cant see why running on LPG would cause an engine to overheat unless the installation was shoddy or it was the old single point type. If your gaskets are going to go then they will go regardless of an lpg conversion, sounds like the horror stories would have happened anyway, you cant blame lpg for a failing water pump.

Conversion is expensive at £2350 but you will make that back after 18K miles and I think it will add to the value of the vehicle.

My insurer did not charge me any extra once it was converted.

You can also get all the lpg stations on your satnav (some models anyway) which is great Autogas Finder : Find Autogas on your SatNav

Getting LPG in europe is no problem but they call it GPL.

Only down side is once a year you need to get the filter changed, budget for about £150 extra to get them to do this.

At the moment I can highly recommend it but only had the conversion 4 weeks.
 
I get the same mpg on petrol as i do on lpg around 12mpg town driving and around 18 to 20 on a run, this is the second lpg range rover i have owned and i have never heard of having to change a filter every year on the gas system? I do know that you have to keep the ignition system in top condition. I have had a new engine fitted slipped liner nothing to do with the gas system it would have happened anyway.
 
hi my 4.6 i bought about 2 months ago it was fitted with a single point system and basically it was crap !!!! although it had been tinkered with which would not have helped in the slightest.
i have since fitted a multi point system ( bigas ) and upto now i am chuffed with it , the v8`s tend to run smoother on lpg than petrol , mpg figures i am not sure at the moment but, one thing is for sure its a damned sight cheaper running them on lpg as opposed to petrol , if you do decide to buy a lpg p38a make sure its a multi point system they are a much better system than the single point , the last thing you need is a back fire with lpg and my old single point did it for fun ! the new system is fine no problems at all .
as far as running to hot goes i think maybe its an old wive`s tale , ive not come across anyone who`s had that kind of problem hope this helps.

i got my 4.6 jan 05 and it was already convertd. it cost me £25 to £30 to fill up with 60 litres max and that will do me for 170 to 180 miles. its a multi point injection system and i get no problem with excess engine temperature at all.
im very happy!
 
Ditto the stories of joy with it. Servicing the system every once in a while is a good idea though. My Prinz system has 2 filters. One for the liquid LPG and one for the gas LPG after the vapouriser. It hadn't been serviced since we bought it nearly 3 years ago and probably not since it had been converted. Cost £75+VAT by Alternative Fuel Systems near Horsham and they were great. Even do the best price aroud for gas too.
