Hi all,
been a while since last on here as have had a x5 for the last 18 months, it has been great but have really missed my old P38 so its time to get the green oval back, question is L322 or sport. What is the most reliable the 4.4 or the 4.2, I presume the 4.4 is BMW and the 4.2 is Jag supplied. Are they straight forward to LPG or a more in depth job. Don't want a deisel as used to the power of the x5 now.
Cheers

The newer 4.2 jag will prob be more reliable

What's your budget ?

Obviously you will want at least a facelift edition (2006 onwards)

I would never buy a sport
Don't like them and the awkward repairs on them that can require the whole body to be taken off puts me off them !

What about a 5.0 supercharged vogue ? Lol

BMW 4.4.

Don't go the sport route.

Jag engine has more problems and I understand doesn't like being gassed.

AS I understand it and as said above, The sport is a Discovery in drag and compromises were made to lob the pretty body on top of the Disco running gear, this leads to some interesting repairs.

I have the 4.3 Jag. Tricky things: As said report are rife of LPG conversions being tricky (allegedly the higher combustion temps can lead to melted/warped heads and a hefty bill) That said on FFRR there were several happy LPGers of the S/C.

The BMW Lump (aside from the usual cr*ppy PCV valves and cheapr plastic housings on some sections) is a great engine; sadly this was teamed with the 5 speed auto which has seen plenty failures. (not that I believe the jag 6 speed is unbustable, there just seems to be fewer failures reported regularly)

Both boxes "sealed for life" seems to now mean "sealed for the life of the original factory warranty"

Also something to watch for on the S/C is the aux coolant pump for the charger itself- many were wired backwards from the factory which can lead to a 'limp home' recovery and a new pump.

Fuel economy, thirsty, but you already knew that! fortunately on all models they made a hole in the rear wing so you can put more fuel in.

What kind of age are you looking for?

Agreed...

The BMW M62 Engine has been around in many guises for a long time and as such parts, information and details are plentiful.

Mine is LPG'd and runs grand...gearbox is always something to keep your eye on!!

Budget probably around the 20K mark but could go a bit higher for the right car .Have to agree that the m62 unit is good as long as there are no problems with the intermediate shafts. On the gearbox, is it a zf or the soft gm unit thats on some x5s. Would love the 5.0 but not won the lottery yet lol.

3.6 v8, thought it had major turbo problems so have not even looked at the performance, I work away from home for 7 months of the year so that is why I can go the petrol route, tbh I do like the smoothness and power of the petrol engines. The previous post that the body has to come of the sport for some jobs kind of scares me towards the L322

4.4 Noting beats the pleasure of a big petrol V8 if you can afford to run it. Sport? No thanks.

A Vogue is just the same to look at as any other L322, I saw dozens of L322's a few Epukes a couple of sports, a fair few Gaylanders and 3 or 4 P38's, classy for it's rarity value:p:):)

By vogue I was referring to the L322.

There is definitely more sports about then the L322's

More worryingly is the massive increase in ejokes

M25, M1 and the North Circular was full of L322's, I could not believe that there could be so many running all at the same time, must have been a record:rolleyes::D
