So, as mentioned in my intro thread, I've bought a 4.0 P38 that runs a bit iffy and makes a funny chuffing noise out of the front, apparently through the inlet manifold.

I did a compression test, middle 2 pots, drivers side bank, 0 psi. Great, theres a definite place to start so the parts ordering and stripdown begin. 1st, the parts, new top end gasket set, cam, lifters and a water pump.
Stripped the engine today and upon removal of the passenger side cylinder head, noticed a code stamped into the block.......46D!!!!!

Further investigation revealed that one of the pistons was facing the wrong way (arrow pointing backwards, not to the front) so it was decided that the engine had been repaired previously using a 4.6 block but maybe retaining the original internals. Only problem now is, will my 4.0 parts fit? I'm especially concerned about the cam.

Lastly, cam anyone tell me if the sump, oil pump and oil pickup pipe have to be completely removed to change the cam?

Thanks.

Couple of pics lol.

4.6 blocks were normallyy the worst :( but we have had lots of debates on here and all we can really say it that most agree the 3.5 was the best.

Now I'm lost:doh:
Cheers lads hehe.

PS, I was told the 46D was identical to the 40D, 4.6 was acheived by stroke, not bore.

I know ther both ****e and have loads of probs on here with liners and headgaskets but I dont know if you parts will fit, sorry. was nice to complain about p38 parts though thanks :p

Good luck with the work though, I know a good mobile landy mechanic if you get stuck. :)

Great, thanks. I've got more of an issue with parts supplies atm (ebay, Terrain Vehicles). Been waiting 5 days for the water pump......still nothing so thats cocked it till Tuesday earliest.
Will have it running this weekend no doubt and hopefully, won't need anyone to look at it because it will be perfect and start 1st time then run like a dream

How do you know that it is not a 4.6 motor rather than just a 4.6 block. The only way to tell is to look at the crank.

That moment has passed. Sump went back on a couple of hours ago but I did get a photo of the lower internals. Is there an obvious difference?

The only obvious difference is that a 4.6 will have 4.6 stamped on the crank. 4.6 pistons also have a larger bowl in the top than 4.0 pistons.

Nah mate, gone tits up.
If I said helicoil need I say anymore?

Its still in bits now, probably till the end of next week assuming I can get an answer to my other thread asking about the helicoils.
