hi all,

Hopeing you can help. So I was driving my 300tdi defender last night and we had covered 20miles or so then all of a sudden the temperature shot up to just in the red. So needless to say I pulled over open expansion tank to see if there was any water and the level was perfect, which being the case we carried on driving and the temperature stayed the same. So my question is has anyone any idea why the temperature would have shot up?
For the record the Landy doesn't get used from one week to the next these days sadly.

check the rad feels hot all over its core when engines up to temp if it isnt replace it ,you need to check level of coolant by removing the plug on top of thermostat housing expansion tank doesnt necessarily mean engine is full, top hose gets hot when thermostat opens doesnt when it doesnt

As above, check the hoses - the top hose should be hot, but not scalding - you should be able to hold your hand on it for a few seconds. The bottom hose should be warm. If the engine doesn't smell very hot, and the hoses are OK, it could be a temperature sender/gauge fault.
