Bit of help please peeps.
Sister in law wants to get a Landy, she does horses, and needs to pull the horse box.
She has tried a 300 tdi manual and it pulls well, she has also tried a td5 auto, this also pulls well.
But her mate has a 300tdi auto and with the box on the back,it is a real slug.but is this typical of the auto?or could it simply be with a de-cat pipe and egr removal,it would be similar to a manual?
She is based basingstoke way ,and only has around £1000 tops, anyone got a good one for sale or now of one-Any help or views much appreciated-she would prefer an auto, but no good if not up to the job.
cheers

typical for 300 auto unless edc which have a few more horeses of thier own to make up for having auto , with 300 tdi manual unless edc then auto is better for towing td5 auto even better

Hi, I have a 300 tdi auto which i use to pull a big twin axle caravan about 1.8 tonnes, at first a bit slugish but since i killed the cat & binned egr its much better, will tow at 70mph all day long. Pulling away at junctions not too bad, acceleration not F1 but ok, pulling up hill not brilliant but again ok. Probably not much between manual & auto, but auto easier to drive when towing. Hope this helps.

Auto is likely to give the horses a smoother ride and leaves you to concentrate on the driving, anticipation etc. We tow horse trailer often with ours, one is a TDi 300 manual the other is a TD5 auto and both do the job more than adequately, but you do have to drive smooth and patiently with live loads.

Re power there's really not a lot in it but my concern is your budget of £1000 which I doubt very much will buy you a sound TDi 300 of any kind.

Post '96 cars have EDC on the auto-box cars so add a few horse power.

Really there is not a lot to choose between them, but, if you are towing a horse trailer there is every chance you'll be going in and out of fields so a set of good all-terrain tyres is a must.

Honestly with your budget and your uses I think you'll struggle.

Good luck

Dave

Thanks for the input guys-I guess she is going to have to save up some more pennies

as dave said her budget is a bit low, last summer me and a mate bought two discos mates was a 1997 ( N) ES tdi manual for £2500 and mine a 1998 ( R ) tdi auto for £2750 and they are both in mint con'd.

I tow my series Landy on a twin axle trailer with my disco 300 tdi auto and it has no probs. Only issues are big hills, which I just take it out of d and change gears manualy it's ok then, and slow setting off but you've allways got low box to set off in if need be.
I've had autos and manuals for towing and I prefer the auto.
