I looked at the excellent posts on here about feeing off the diff lock levers and got my 99 300tdi up on the ramps and freed the rusty levers off . I particularly liked the utube vids" diff locks last stand" ,I can sympathise with the chaps views .
Anyway ,got it all freed off ,when I push over the gear knob into diff lock it stays put and the light comes on but when I look underneath ,I can push the lever that rotates on top of the box , a bit further over with a screwdriver, from underneath the vehicle .
Am I right in assuming that the gear knob moves it sufficient to engage diff lock and that the extra bit I can move it with a screwdriver isn't needed ? the linkeages don't appear bent or excessively worn .
It will be months before I can try it out on snow and by then if it isn't actually locking the centre diff it will be a problem . Any bright ideas to check if the centre diff is actually locked ?

as long as diff lock selects and de selects its ok theres more travel than is needed

Diff lock is no guarantee of traction in snow. I'd test the diff lock now if worried.
Yes , I know . My last disco ,a 96 ,the one I was trying to flog years ago for rebuild ,got me through the winter of 2009/10 ,it snowed for weeks here in the north east of Scotland . The snow was so bad that at the Distillery I worked at ( Glenfiddich ) had seven warehouse roofs collapse under the weight of snow ,loads of agricultural buildings went down as well ,only the original steep pitched slate roofs withstood it .
A set of Hankook knobblies and diff lock , on the old disco got me the 20 miles to work and back each day for weeks ,really enjoyed it .
