Ah've got a question to ask for a mate of mine so here goes...

Driving home from work tonight me landy started dying on me.Symptoms like fuel starvation. If ye lift the throtle for a few seconds then floor it again it pulls away for about 5 seconds then dies, but if ye hold the pedal steady, not letting it labour,it keeps going but it wont drive any faster than 40 mph.I've checked the filter and it looks okay, and took the lift pump off which also seems to function okay. There is a strange kind of ratchety noise coming from the injector pump area but i'm not sure if it is the pump itself. I changed timing belt a couple of days ago but noise was there before then although it was'nt as loud. Has anyone got any ideas as to what might be wrong. Thanks.

....Anyone got any ideas?
Cheers;) :D

i assume it is a doozil, Buster?

As you said it sounds typical fool starvation - the "pump" cant keep up with the demand - reduce the demand and its OK.

change the fuel filter - eliminate the lift pump by gravity feeding from a washing up liquid bottle taped to yer snorkel - fill the tank with fuel incase the pickup has collected some crap from the bottom - check the air hoses for delamination - cancel xmas and get another IP

i'd bet on it being the lift pump

I had this last week - following morning started no bother drove to garage and filled it with diesel. I think I might have a cracked pickup or something in the tank. If it does it again when the tank gets low I am fitting a new tank.

The IP on the Disco made this noise a few years back and it didn't sound too good, but the thing ran OK until it was driven on the motorway then it would not pull above about 2500/3000. Turned out to be the lift pump, as soon as it was replaced the clicking went. I put it down to the IP having to do the job of the lift pump too. So could be your starvation issue is casuing this sound in yours. I suspect filter or line blockage.

Cheers Sean, Ah could only think of the filter and lift pump. He ordered a new pump today so should be here by tomorrow. When he changed the timing belt and ran it for a bit there didn't seem to be any noises at all, and ah'm sure he said it only happened on the way back from work.
Ah've just had a look at the fuel system layout diagram and there might be a sedimenter.. would this have anything to do with it?

Could do .. mine was full of a slimy, jelly like 'stuff' ... BUT ... be careful. I first tried to release the water drain, plastic plug on bottom, which promptly snapped. Thought then I'd just take it all off to clean and then replace it, and the whole thing fell apart. Situated alongside the rear offside chassis rail. Bugger of a job, not hard just damned awkward. Try other stuff (like the lift pump) first ... ;)
