Hi all,

My wife has a Defender 90 with a 300TDI (manual box) that has developed a unpleasant ticking noise which is somewhere deep in the bowels of the engine, as it is her daily driver I haven't been able to take it off the road to fix it.
I have just bought a 300TDI auto Discovery and am planning to transplant the engine, whilst hers is out I'll rebuild it as it has done well over 200,000 miles.

As there is different fuel pumps on each engine, I am wanting to know if it is a simple switch with the fuel pumps and if there is anything else that will need to be changed over?
The new Disco is in a sad state, but the engine is good, I'm thinking I'll poach the transfer box for my manual 300TDI Disco, as there is a bad whineing noise which I believe is from the transfer box.

Any tips or guidance on the engine transplant will be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Sam

The fuel pump you refer to, actually isn't - its the fuel injection pump ( FIP ) - sorry to be a pedant, :rolleyes:but it will avoid confusion later.:)

The D1 you are scrapping will have EDC - which is an electronically controlled FIP, higher pressure injectors, and a Crank position sensor (CPS) on the bellhousing. The ECU is in the car, behind the dash, high up on the RHS.

You'll need to change the injectors to standard 300 Tdi ones which go with the mechanical FIP. #4 injector from the EDC system has some value if it works, so save it carefully...

The spigot bush in the flywheel on the auto is, IIRC, different too, but other than that it should all fit easily, as the FIP's are completely interchangeable. I've De EDC'd my own D1 auto, so I know this bit is an easy job.

Are you selling the auto box ? if so, I might be interested, subject to your location:)

Thanks for that, great information!
Is there much difficulty getting the manual gearbox to fit where the auto once was?
I assume it's just remove the torque converter and install the flywheel, and as you say the spigot bush may be a different size.

I'm not sure you would like the freight charges on shipping the auto box.
I live in New Zealand!

remove, drive plate to expose crank fit spigot bush ,remove engine to box support plate and fit the manual fly wheel housing and fly wheel and clutch box bolts on then
