Hi guys, I took my washer bottle out last week to clean the algae out from inside it and while it was out had a play around with some air filter box ideas. I had a Disco airbox lying about so I tried that and with some fettling it would fit. I have also seen an image on Google of someone who has done this and it looks pretty stock and smart (what I want).

I just wondered if anyone else had any other ideas or images of their setup I could look at. My situation is a 300tdi in the 2.5NA position. The engine has been in for about 8 years and at the time I stuck a conical air filter thing over the end of the intake pipe which has just sat there but it looks naf and is not a great filter.

I did have a Donaldson filter housing as fitted to the Wolf but after looking at getting it mounted to the aircon mount type bracket and the pipework I was going to need to run I decided it looked awful and sold it on.

One option was to bin the intercooler (looks past it) and fit a front mount which would open up the space where the intercooler was allowing a filter housing to sort of sit upright (like the original one the vehicle had).

Anyway... ideas on a postcard please.

Mine was removed before i got it, filter had brackets welded to it but i could not figure out where they fitted it. Put mine on the original chassis position using the three pegs and it looks ok.

I'm in the same boat, 300tdi in a military 110. I wanted to keep the air filter in the original N/A position, but various intercooler pipes are in the way, not helped by me fitting the PAS reservoir next to the intercooler.
I have spent ages messing with a Discovery air filter housing, but can't find a neat position for it, the base isn't the best shape and it gets too close to the exhaust manifold for my liking.
I've got a temporary solution at the moment, but want a permanent answer that looks factory fitted.

Dont know what i was thinking about there. Mine is bolted onto a plate that is bolted to the steering box mounts on the n/s. It sits inside the chassis in front of the engine and i can pull it out by removing the clamp and leaving the base which is bolted through the bottom to the plate.

Mine went from 19j (2.5 Turbo) to 300 Tdi. I use the 19j airbox with cut down 300tdi filters. The airbox mounts are cut and it's mounted in the same place, but abut an inch or so lower so the intercooler pipe clears it. It ain't pretty, but it works .. :)

I have done exactly the same thing, although I need to make mine a little lower again as the front mount intercooler sits a little lower so the pipe is back resting on the air box. I have a 200tdi conversion but other than slightly different pipe routing from airbox to turbo it is the same set up.

Yes everything you said is bang on - PAS stuff in the way, inter-cooler pipes, box too close to hot manifolds!!

I guess this is going to take some standing and staring at the engine bay!

Thanks for the images, sadly I think I sold my air filter box like yours, which was original to my vehicle - may need to buy one back now!

Where is your PAS reservoir?

The PAS reservoir on mine is on the drivers side wing at the front just above the steering box.

Mine's also on the drivers wing, just above the steering box. That's a no-brainer though, flexible hoses, just molish a mount and you can stick it almost anywhere ... ;)

Right, I did this last night. I am pleased with it, only took me about 8 years to get round to it:

I need a new clamp for the intake pipe but it is a snug fit as is. I was about to gleefully throw the old ****ty K&N pile of crud in the bin when I remembered I have a skid mount generator project and it will make a good primary filter - although, I may still chuck it as I really detest them and the poor filtration they offer! The slight dust layer down in the intake pipework does worry me a little, I just hope that the relative few miles I have done over the last 8 years won't have caused any lasting damage to the engine!

Is that a Disco box?

Where do you have the inlet hose going to?

Cheers

It is indeed with a shiny new filter in it!

The intake pipe goes to an intake plenum from a Volvo, which sits above the inner wheel arch, this way it ought not to get any direct spray on it or any water passing under the bonnet seal directly into the in take - it is lose as of now but I will use three little standoffs to attach it to the top of the inner wing.

I am pretty pleased with it, to the non-LR owner it looks pretty stock actually!

Here's mine as it is now.
Can't take the credit as it was done for me but it is ok. Fitted on legs to the inner wing.
I'm thinking it might have been better to come off frontwards as you have with the intake to the front.
Mine is to the rear and I have tried fitting conv pipe out under the heater box to the exterior vent but it is very tight and then you suck in quite a lot of wet crud from the front wheels.
Also with no pipe on at the mo it does boom rather loudly on first take up.
It must be taking in warm air too when moving slowly so that's not too good (working on it!) but it is tidy and an easy Disco 1 filter change which does not appear to get too dirty either.
You wanted a comparison.... :)

I like that, that is neat. I didn't consider rear air intake as yours is so mine sits a little higher because the box is deeper on the intake side but I do quite like the rear option and ability to put the water bottle to the front. I don't think warm air at idle or low speed is an issue, not like your need the benefit of an intercooled turbocharged engine in those circumstances.

Right I have just looked at mine, the lid only locks down one way, so how have you achieved the locking of the filter housing? It looks like some of the clips could be made to lock the other way round... it looks like you have a frame around yours.

I am keen on possibly rotating mine, I would then use my intake pipe and plenum along the top.

No additional frame - is a standard D1 Box on a bottom braket.
One of the clips (nearest the Cam) stayed where it was and the other 2 have been re-sited (rivited) with fabricated clips. Hope the pics show.
I am still keen to get an intake path forwards (to stop the booming) but my 'lecky box' mount is in the way and may have to re-site - Just wanted it as high as poss.
