So I cleaned my engine today , a good spray over with some degreaser followed by a light jet wash , avoiding all electrics , I kept the engine running while cleaning , been running stating and stopping no problem all day , just driving home now and stopped at traffic lights , the engine cut out , it wouldn’t start again till I managed to bump it on the hill, but then every time the revs drop below 2000 it will cut out again ? Any ideas ?

I’ve just spent the day doing this , had it running for 5 mins then it shut down again
Have you checked the diesel lift pump is working properly, or that the diesel filter on the bulkhead ain't got no water in it and the banjo bolt thingy is good and tight?
I am wondering if air is getting in or it just isn't getting enough fuel when running slowly. you could test this by rigging up a gravity feed to the injector pump to check if that is the problem.

That’s what I been thinking but I’ve checked and rechecked every connector , the only wire I could find that is a bit worse for ware was the one to the fuel stop solenoid
Aha!
Have you tried removing the stop solenoid, putting its housing back then starting it? You can always stop it by putting it in 5th then stalling it. The electric part of the solenoid might be shorting possibly due to water ingress.

i am talking as if this is possible. i have done this in the past with other diesel cars, but tbh I have never tried it on my 300tdi cos I never needed to. But you can test the solenoid by removing the plug and then using a jumper lead of some type to give it positive, every time it connects you should hear it click then click again when you remove the lead.

That’s gonna be the next step I think , I’ve cracked all the fuel lines one at a time , the lift pump is good , fuel getting to filter and injection pump but not from pump to injectors so this had led me to believe the solenoid ? Am I correct in thinking that ?

It could well be.
I'd start by making a jumper wire from the batt +ive to the solenoid. You should hear it click as soon as you touch it to it. but maybe the click will be inaudible. So I'd connect it anyway, with a clip or something then try and start it. If it works you've got somewhere. Failing that, you could remove the solenoid as described above. The solenoid itself could have gone u/s, that was what happened to me.
Once removed if you can get it started and running properly, you have temporarily solved the problem, you just need to stall the car to stop the engine. Until you get a new solenoid!!!

Well that sounds like a job for tomorrow , Thankyou , failing that it’s getting sold lol

You won't get much for it non running!!!;)
If you can get it running even for 5 minutes, it can't be that serious, for example I don't think it can be the injection pump.
Best of luck mate and keep us posted!:)

It was a stuck solenoid after all , sold it an hour ago so now it’s someone else’s problem ( I did tell the new owner it needed changing ) but on a plus note I bought a new disco 1 to replace it lol Thankyou to all
