Morning All!

Over the last week I've been keeping an eye on diesel consumption and my motor seems to be doing about 23mpg (mainly short runs but rural!)... does this seem reasonable or should I be concerned? Thanks for any info with which you can supply me. FL

I can get 30 if I'm careful (and when it was snowing), but normally I have a lead right foot, so nearer 20-25

But mine is an auto which brings it down a bit.

Auto Prob just bout right, Manual its a bit on the poor side,....... Service?

Auto or manual?

depending on driving you should be seeing around 22 - 30mpg and if it is only short journeys then could be about right. Have you serviced it recently?

I now leave my auto in 3rd when driving round town and under 50mph.I get about 1 mpg better fuel consumption and drives better.24.5 mpg last check.

1 good service - change fuel filter, clean out sedimenter
2 swap nasty paper filter for k&n or pipercross or WHY
3 remove the egr valve, bin it, burn it , squash it with a road roller whatever just get it off the engine
4, check the tyre pressures
5, what tyres you running on - heavy off road ones give crap fuel consumption, there said it :behindsofa:
6, turn off the aircon if fitted - thats what windows are for
7, get rid of the cat, only cost £20(ish)
8, clean out the intercooler and inlet manifold

right that covers most of the ways of getting better fuel economy

:welcome:

i usually get between 26-32 mpg from mine depending on how i drive and what i'm doing,i asume you've done all the usual tweek's on it.ie,de-egr and cat and fine tunned your ip.a few week's before i service mine i run a few tank's of svo through it and it seems to do it good on it's last mot the tester said it was quite a clean engine for a tdi.

A kit of three filters (air, oil and fuel) costs £6.28+vat, why would you bother faffing about with the old one?

Filter Kit - Disco 300TDI

Truck came with a new fuel filter when i bought it, got a new oil and filter from my mate at euro's. Fitted it, then discovered how cheap the kits were.

Not done a timing belt kit change recently have you?.....

Nope, i haven't changed it. PLanning on soon though as don't know when it was last changed. You thinking the timing could be slightly out?

1. change the filter, haven't done the sedimenter yet, thats near the tank isn't it?
2. K&N would be good, but i was seeing prices of £45+, seems alot really.
3. Have un-plugged it but gotta plate it and fit a new pipe.
4. Good idea, think there ok but will double check.
5. Currently mix and match of on road tyres.
6. No air con lol.
7. Yep thats on the list, got a downpipe from a 200tdi so bit of cutting and welding and that'll be sorted.
8. Got another cooler to go on and gonna clean the inlet when i sort the EGR.

Good bit of info there guys, i'll get these jobs done and report back with (hopefully) good news.

Chris.

Chris.

I change all three filters every 6000mls and I was getting 33mpg average over 15,000mls.

I wouldn't bother with a K&N filter on a TDi 300 myself, but if you want one, get it here:

K and N Filter - 300TDI - Discovery

Cheers
Dave
Ps Get a new airfilter in !!!!!!!!!!

I get around 400 miles from full to the last quarter on the gauge-think this is about 24 mpg but this is on home made biodiesel, only costs me 12p per litre(plus my time of course)-but I still have the egr and catalytic converter to do when the weather warms up,and all my driving is round town in traffic jams.

drivers side rear wheel hidden inside chassis :D

Oh that sounds like a fun job.
Removed the EGR valve last night and cleaned out the intercooler, bloody flys now! Reckon there was a couple of litres of dried oil in there.

Think i might just chuck a standard filter in there, only a fiver down Euro's.
