Wifey is away this weekend so have been listing jobs to do to the disco one of which is new wheel bearing or brake pads.

Have recently heard a slight grinding noise from the n/s front wheel which I thought was the bearing but it seems to get louder under braking which now makes me think brake pads even though they look ok.

Rang a few local motor factors who have asked which pads I have but would need to order them in either way so I need to find out today if possible.

Is there a way of finding out which pads I have without removing the wheel (at work at the mo), did different years have different pads?

Cheers.

Hi Bobbler, if I remember correctly, the options are 1. abs or non abs; 2. single or vented discs.

1. The abs question is answered by looking into the engine bay, rhs and between the air filter box and the screen washer bottle. If there is a big lump of a thing with metal pipes going to it that's the abs pump, so you have abs.

I know some smart alec will come along and say it's much easier to just look at the dashboard and see if you have a red abs light - but some previous owners resolve abs problems by removing the dashboard bulb !! The only definitve way is to see if you have the abs pump as mentioned above. if you have, you have abs calipers so need abs pads.

2. Single or vented - the vented ones look like two discs fastened together, the single ones are, well, single. Take a look and it will be obvious.

Good luck and have your VIN number ready for the parts supplier

Dave

Cheers for the replies its a 97 300tdi auto with abs and solid front discs :) (i know this after checking the bearing last night)

even after telling them this they are still asking what type of pads I have apparently there are two different sizes and one (as always) is more expensive than t'other.

Oh and mine is an orange abs light too ;)

does anyone have a part number I could call up with or know which pads I would need? The best way they could explain it to me was one had pins and t'other had a lip but I was under the impression all 300tdis had pins in the front pads

I think the early TDi 300 ones were similar/same as TDi 200 and had a lip.

But of course I could be wrong?

hi, go on the paddocks web site they do ebc green stuff 6000 pads, far superior to any other pads for about 25 quid happy days.

Would have liked ebc but dont have time to wait for their postage.

Think I have found a solution, a local motor factors has both in stock and the prices arent to bad either :) if I get the wrong pads I can take them back and change them.

Hope its not the wheel bearing though they want just short of £40 for a replacement  and no one else has them in stock round here.

The wheel bearing can often be solved by slightly tightening it up and repacking with grease (grease first, thinking about it).Ive rarely had to actually replace wheelbearings unless they had visible distortion and/or excessive wear,or were collapsed. That goes for working on old (by todays standards) lorries too. And the bearing races shouldnt be that expensive.Try buying from a LR factor than a general one as they shift more so bulk keeps the prices down.Or even find a local bearings factor and get them there. But unless they are in bits then a little tighten will see you through until you have time to mail order some at sensible money!

Oh,and all three ABS 300 disco that I have owned have had oranbe lights.....maybe someone took the orange one out for an MOT and replaced it with red,,,,,:rolleyes::D:D:D

Oh,I had to do a 300 ABS's brakes last friday afternoon and the car was needed by the night so I had to buy at a general auto parts factor....even with trade discount they were £35 just for the front.I was a little upset.

Thgere were several types, vented or non being the main difference. Then it came down to a choice of two (not including sensor wires which get cut off anyway) and I took the larger, wider option thinking I could always grind them back if they were too big.Now that last bit is very silly and extremely naughty as it can damage the structure of the pad so DONT DO IT.

Turned out they were the right ones, which are, :

LOCKHEED DELPHI LP481 (front)

they are listed for discos, defenders, series and london taxis.

I've just looked at the abs-equipped TDi 300 outside and the light is..............................................Orange :eek::eek:

I'm not playing this game anymore - and it's my ball and I'm taking it home:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Bobbler are you local to Hartlepool?

Pattersons 01429 264445 do a wheel bearing kit for a 300Tdi for under £20 with both bearings, lock nut, washer, etc

Have used them a few times always had good service from them (and sometimes discount for cash which is always good ;)) but closer to Darlo than Hartlepool.

New pads from local factors will be about £20 so not too bad but will be going in for oil and a few other bits so should get a few quid off anyway :)
