Hope you guys can help....
I have a 300TDi Disco with an auto box. few days ago with the girlfrined driving she says it refused to change up a gear. Called to have it recovered and here the story becomes a bit vague! Recovery people said it wouldn't drive at all (I don't believe them!), had it recovered to a local garage, 1 mechanic thinks the the recovery guy topped up the auto box fluid, other mechanic says he topped it up. When I arrived to look, it was driving and sounding fine so took it home. It does have a very slight leak from the auto box oil radiator. I decided to fix the leak, drained the fluid, fixed the leak and re-filled it. Now it has a weird rattle. Was fine when I ran it to check auto box fluid level, but took it out for a 3 mile drive and it has a whine / rattle. The rattle sounds like a tie wrap caught in a fan! (No it isn't, I checked that!) Pretty sure its coming from the auto box / transfer box area. Odd thing is, parked it up for 10 minutes, when I started it up and drove home it was fine, no noise at all. Then, started it up cold again today and same noise. Noise is there in 2WD, Neautral or 4WD on transfer box and is there in park or neutral on gearbox. Oddly, it disappears if you select reverse or drive for about 5 seconds but then is heard to come back. Any thoughts?

Am I right that the transfer box would all be stationary with the auto box in park? If so, I guess it can't be coming from the transfer box? Could it be wrong auto box oil as it only started after I changed it out?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Seems to do it all the time. If I put transfer box in Neutral, noise can be heard in 1,2,3,Drive, Neutral, Reverse or park. Pushing the selecter doesn't seem to make a difference.

Just for your info, there is no such thing as selecting 2wd or 4wd on a Discovery, it's always 4wd.The smaller gear lever switches between high & low ratios plus difflock off & on.
