My battery not charging light has come on recently and found my alternator was only putting out 12.5v.
I replaced the alternator with another used one, the battery light went out but the alternator was over charging 14.8-15.5v and the lights flickering.

So I've removed it again and assumed it was the voltage regulator at fault.
Upon disassembly it almost looks like there is no voltage regulator at all, in the sense that it doesn't look like any of the ones I've seen as replacement parts.

That's a bodge and a half by the looks of it - you can buy a new regulator for about £25 but I'd just send it back. The whole thing just looks knackered.

Yes, it seems like some ugly bodge there cos that power transistor seems to not be connected to anything

I assume you are saying those 4 prongs should be attached to something? That's what my guess was.

I'm thinking I'll just buy a new alternator, as the current on is pretty old and replacing just the regulator may not be the most cost efficient.
New Denso ones from LR Direct of Britcar are pretty well priced.

I was speaking about the two "legs" of that power transistor which is in the middle, according to the second pic they are in the air
