Hi all have just purchased a disco 300 tdi on a 96 (106k) manual for the wife to use to get to the stables through the coming winter (also means she leaves my defender alone lol )

any ways im very happy with the car although when you reach 60 mph there is a whine/drone when under load , if the throttle is released a bit it stops , ive tried in 4th and 5th and its still the same so guessing its not gearbox related  but im a bit unsure what to try any help would be greatly appreciated .

regards gnhclark

Had the same problem on mine last week. The front prop shaft bearings were shot so I replaced it as well as a badly worn donut on the back prop shaft, not that the donut would create much noise (unless it let go completely).

i have got the same problem on mine its one of the rear wheel bearings im just waiting till i cant hear myself think before i do it coz im a lazy little **** and im a bit brassick too

I have a 200 v8.

That used to whine in 3rd, worse in 4th, worst in 5th, any speed.

It was the front & rear diffs - both had got full of ****e when off roading and the gears were pitted.

Now cured with air lockers :D

Remove a prop shaft and drive in diff lock to work out whether it is front or rear, or both.

However it might not be diffs at all, could just be standard transfer case whine? Maybe input gear is a bit worn?

It's obviously a transmission issue as it goes away off throttle, wheel bearing would whine 24/7

Cheers.

Ours does it too. only in 5th. stuck some molyslip additive in the box and two years later its still there but much reduced.

evening, cheers for the ideas as soon as the lincolnshire weather decides to ease up ill climb underneath and have a tinker will keep you posted on my finds .

cheers Gav

My last 200 did that, until one day in bristol city center it went BANG.....it was the transfer box.All my others have done it and its been wheel bearings, thankfully straightforward if tedious to do.In fact the only running one has the fron O/S whining now.....normally a little tighten up does the trick.

still waiting for it to stop raining !!!!!!!!

i would of thought if its a wheel bearing it would do it all the time and not just under load , but im prob wrong . (thinking maybe transfer box but hopefully not)
