Hi all, anyone got any ideas what might be the problem?

Just had my Disco throw a wobbler on me and had it sent to a garage which changed the dds unit as it wouldnt start. At the same time I had the cambelt changed.

I got it back yesterday and on the way home I noticed the car vibrating through the gears from about 1500rpm to about 2500rpm. (which I dont think has anything to do with the garage, just coincidence I hope)

Today I have done a 100 mile round trip and the vibration has got progressively worse and the last 30 miles which was wet has caused a horrible high pitched squeal which goes away when freewheeling in neutral.

A couple of Months ago a garage changed the rear prop u.j. and advised me that the front one was worn, could this cause excessive vibration????

I have ordered a new u.j. for the front prop, but should there be 2 to do?, if so I will order another.

I need this problem sorted before my trip to Dorset in a couple of weeks.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Front prop does have 2 UJ's and it is worth changing them both. Every time I've dpone 1 I've found the other goes a few months later ... ;)

Thanks Paul D,

I have been underneath it today and the u.j. to the rear of the front prop has lots of vertical movement in it and looks as though it is shot.

I already have one on order and will get another ordered up today.

Just coincidence that it decided to let go on the way back from the garage!!!! Just spent a fortune on the old girl, it doesn't rain, it pours!!!

I love my disco though and know that once the work is complete she will be back in shape.

Will let you know if this cures the problem.

Hope so, nice one .. ;)

They're pretty easy to replace, have a look here for further info ....

Busters UJ renewal

It's for a Defender, but the props are near as dammit identical and certainly the UJ renewal process is .. ;)

Thanks for the link, I have printed the pics off and will crack on with it as soon as the u.j. links arrive. I have already printed off the process from the rave cd but there is nothing quite like following the step by step process from someone elses photos.

Fitted the new u.j. today and it runs like a dream (no more feeling like being in a jumbo jet taking off down the runway).

Thanks for your help:)

Now its just the anti-roll bar bushes and links to do, oh and sort those front fog lights out that dont work, although they look a bit rusty and sorry for themselves underneath so I think I might replace them.

Anybody know where I can get hold of some cheap disco 300 tdi front fogs?????

Arrrrrggghhhh! Spoke too soon!!!

A grumbling noise has now appeared after just a few miles, so I have today changed the other u.j on the front prop, but alas no better.

Vibration has gone but a grumbling sound is still there under acceleration load.

I am now wondering if I damaged the new u.j pressing the cups in as I had problems getting them in deep enough for the circlips to fit in the recess.

Pushing them that last bit was met with a lot of resistance.

I am wondering if this was because of it was a cheap u.j.and wasnt a good fit????

Pondering on biting the bullet and getting a replacement prop to see if that cures it.

All my fluid levels underneath are o.k.

:(:(:(
