A couple of weeks ago I damaged the Cambelt cover on my 300 tdi defender, upon replacement i checked the cambelt and found the tensioner, idle pulley and belt to be nakered, even though the previous said it was done 9000miles ago!

Anyway upon finding this I Decided to change the cambelt, before i removed the old belt i checked the timing, with the crankshaft and camshaft lined up wth its marks i tried to slide a locking peg into the fuel pump with little sucess, i found the pump to be about 1/2 a tooth out!

When I fitted the new belt and pulleys i got the timing marks bang on with the pump locked woth the peg. I turned the engine over by hand twice and rechecked with the marks and peg. With the marks lined up the peg slipped beautifully in to the injection pump. I was happy!
After rebuilding teh rest of the vehicle i started it and it ran horrible!! very lumpy at tickover, it wasnt overly happy to rev and plooms offsmoke!!

as it was already built up i adjusted the pump through the cover so it idled smoothly and reved up without smoking, Once it seemed ok i drove it up the road and realised there was a HUGE lack of power!!! ive tried slightly adjusting the poump again but with no gain!

Can anyone help me please???

You can get your pump timing checked. There is a sensor made by Snap-On (there may be others) that clamps around the no.1 injector pipe. It senses the firing impulse of the cylinder, so that a normal strobe light can be used. Because of the cost, these things are quite rare. Once it is connected up, you can adjust your timing through the cover, as you have done, to get the 'ignition' to 10 degrees BTDC. As there is little adjustment available, you may have to take the whole lot apart to move the belt one tooth.

I have a couple of times changed 300tdi belts where the engine would not even start though timed perfectly on the marks. I believe wear and tear on the pump tends to retard the timing, as the pump does not give early high pressure to open the injectors at 195bar. So the injectors open later and later as the pump wears.

Injectors can be adjusted and even have the tips changed, and the pump can be reconditioned by a good Bosch agent. But it all costs money.
