300 TDI ES Engine noise?

Hi, new too this site, I have a 96 300 TDI ES Auto, in the last couple of weeks it has started a load, metallic banging / knocking noise on start up, last for 10 - 20 seconds, then gone, no more noises, drives fine pulls extremely well, no smoke no oil loss or over heating, stop start many times no more noise, leave to get cold and it does it again, but only from cold. sounds like its coming from around fuel dist pump area, disconnected ac pump, and removed fan belt... just cant pin point exactly where or what is causing this? any help would be extremely appreciated... Has anyone had some issues?

I note it's an auto trans, could the noise be due to a cracked or broken flex plate on the torque converter, failure of this bit is not uncommon, have a bit of a search through the forum pages.
There are many others on the forum that have deep experience with these engines, someone will be able to give a more informed opinion, and may have experienced the same.
Welcome to LZ, and before someone else gets onto you, it is appreciated that new members on the forum introduce themselves in the " Introduce yourself" section at the start of the forum before getting to the questions, or so I believe, just a courtesy.
 
Sorry just done intro. Engine now in bits can see any issues. Flex plate etc. Waiting on new parts from island 4 x 4. Only thing Ive seen is the brake pump has about 1/4 inch free movement before it starts to push on shaft? Don't know if that's how they are or whether that's the noise banging on camshaft?
