hi how hard would it be for me to convert my 24v ffr lightweight to 12v so i can fit a v8 do i just need to lower the voltage or do i need to change electrical components aswell? thanks

You would need to change an awfull lot of stuff. starting with the altanator, bulbs, wiper motors, blower motor etc. why can't you just get a coil for 24v and a 24v starter to run your v8 or do you want efi. or you could leave 24v system intact and just fit another battery for just 12v's for the engine only but you would need to run 2 altanators

right thanks im likeing the sound of two alternators
do you know wether a range rover v8 fits the series 3 gearbox and if so would a perkins td from a range rover fit the series gearbox? :) ive also heard that the big perkins would snap the half shafts is this the case and would it wreck my gearbox as well can i get heavy duty half shafts ?

as above, everything that relys on the 12volts will need changine, all the lights, starter, alternator, some dash componants, coil,

as said, swap the starter and coil, run off a 12 v then add an alternator for 12,v

have had a big perkins in a series 2, Td, was ok fer me, but have seen 'arf shafts shredded with them, yer can uprate the axle componants to suite the engine, new shafts,

ended up having to addapt the gearbox tunell and crossmember, also a few cuts in the bulkhead to get the engine sitting right, but it were a monster after :D:D:D

nice it sounds like it! have you still got and if you have can i see some pics im new to landys and have a scrap range rover as well as my lightweight are there any axle parts i could use of this apart from the diffs :D

You can use a ballast resistor, jap cars often have a 6 volt coil and a ballast resistor to drop from 12 to 6, the resistor is bypassed while the starter is cranking the engine, to give the plugs a better spark (the battery volts drops while cranking).
You could do this with a resistor from 24v down to 12, you could try a headlight dim dip resistor from a more modern car, a true rms multimeter accross the coil would tell you if you have 12 volts are not.
My pennysworth.
