Freelander 1 225/65/17 Tyres will they fit?

Hi all. Looking at options for new tyres. The 225/55/17s that are fitted now have less choice and are more expensive than 225/65/17s. I have read that the 65 profile can be fitted without any mods and others say they can't.

So, does anyone have a definitive answer to this, as in they've done it and it works?

Mine has 225/60/17 and the fit fine. There's more than enough space to fit a 65% without hitting the spring cups.

I have 225/75 R16 which fit fine. Yours will be a good bit smaller so should be fine.

The is the 17" Trek rims with 225/60/17 Maxxis ATs fitted.

Here ya go. This is with a 50mm lft kit, but I can't see any reason why they wouldn't fit without it. I'm working on getting the rear wheel back into the middle of the wheel arch with a custom trailing arm.

LOL, That might happen some day. In the mean time I keep them as a threat, so it behaves itself.

Hiya I recently put 225/70/17 cooper tires on my td4 no rubbing at all, in fact feels a lot better in the steering dept too.
I checked the speedo with my sat nav and was spot on better than before (accurate).

Looking at getting some General Grabber AT's. Anyone had these? Are they good in snow and ice ? My job entails getting called out to mobile phone sites when there is a problem, as it's coming up to winter and a lot of my patch is in the highest parts of Norh Wales so I need a tyre that is good in these conditions. I volunteer for the emergency restoration team that had me in the NW Highlands last year. The Pirelli Scorpions I had were fantastic.

I don't like them on the Freelander. I find them too crude and noisy.
I've had good results with Yokohama Geolander AT'S. They are better in the wet compared to the Grabbers and the Yokohama AT'S are cheaper. They'll be my next tyre when these Maxxis ATs are done.

Nodge, could you confirm the above size fits the standard freelander with no mods? I might be getting a set of trek rims so after a set of tyres, want to fill the arch as much as possible without causing any problems. does the at tyres create much more noise or affect ride and economy much?

i went from 225/55/17 to 225/65/17 .. same make / model of tyre
( overall tyre diameter difference .. 45mm .. no mods needed to fit )
the higher profile changes ..
speed .. speedometer reads slightly lower than actual speed
gearing .. ups the gearing slightly ..
steering .. larger circumference .. slightly different steering response
also more flex in higher sidewalls ..
( caught me out the first time i drove on some real twisty 'b' roads
( as i didn't take 'steering' into consideration when making the choice
( it's only a small difference .. easy to get used to ..
seems to roll a tad more in corners
ride is a bit softer .. just a bit .. using same psi of 32 as used in prev. tyres

i went for the higher profile mainly to up the gearing ..
( 'cause i've modded the engine to respond as best it can from low rpm )
seems to suit the vehicles' on-road performance better ..

can't comment regarding AT tyres .. never have tried them

+1 for the Yoko Geolander AT-S - I have these on my Hippo (thanks to Nodge for the recommendation). No concerns on the road and off road they were superb. Very pleased with them!

225/60/17 tyres fit the standard Freelander on Trek rims. That's my current setup and it's fine. There's plenty of room between the tyres and spring cups.

Geolander AT-S are good tyres for the money. The only tyres that I've found better are the Pirelli Scorpion ATR. The Scorpions are slightly quieter on the road compared to the AT-S. The Geolander last a bit longer and are a bit more aggressive than the Scorpions.

So 225/60/17 are fine, what about 225/65/17? Does the 65 mean side wall is taller? Will both sizes fit without problems? I have found some maxxis 771 for £85 each is this a good price(not fitted is online price)? Anyone got any better prices or recommendations for tyres?

I have Maxxis Bravo AT 771 in 225/60/17 on my Trek rims.

I like the 60 profile as they give me slightly better steering response.
I bought my Maxxis in 2012 for about £65 each fitted. I've been 35K miles on then since then.

Next time I change them, I'll get Yokohama Geolander AT-S 102.
These are better in the wet and have slightly softer side walls.
