2007 Defender possible EGR problem

I'm posting for a friend. When switching the ignition on or off, there are a number of sort of wheezing noises.
Research suggests this is the EGR doing a self cleaning cycle, is this likely?
Can the EGR be blanked without causing the MIL light to activate? Or is a remap the only way.
I'm sure there must be some enthusiasts out there that will know the answers, I stick to P38's

As in the header, a 2007 Defender.

No cleaning cycle. Most likely the fuel pump. At 2007 it could be a td5 or a Ford transit engine.

It's the PSA/Ford Puma I'm told.

Thanks for that, I did not find that thread

It pretty much confirms what I have read elsewhere, new EGR or possibly a clean up needed and a re-map is the only way to disable the darn thing.
