hi

first thing is , have u checked u haven’t got a split or loose intercooler hose

is normally the left hand one as u look at the engine on the top bend

does it go into limp mode at all plse

Hi i get no lights on dash and no power loss the car drives fine if you didnt see the smoke in the mirror you would never know it was doing it .ive not checked anything yet only basic stuff like levels .again its completely random when its done it ??? I intend to get a garage to check it but would like to make sure i dont get ripped off with new turbo ect. if it could be something simple cheers

as it’s random it wouldn’t hurt to get a diagnostics plugged in and seeing what the live data readings are for the injectors or if any DTCs are stored

out of curiosity it doesn’t happen when it’s below 7c does it , according to the instrument display

may i ask

1) have u tried cleaning out ur MAP sensor
2) are both ur egrs blanked
3) do u use supermarket fuel
4) does the smoke happen at or above 2,000 revs

personally i bought a reader made by gap and called the iid

shame ur too far away otherwise i could have plugged my reader in FOC for u , they do pay for themselves very quickly and can save u a lot of money in not having to run back and forth to the garage

Don’t know about the 2.7 but the 3.0 had a similar fault read somewhere that it’s something with the “little” turbo spools up and for some reason it creates pressure drop and sucks oil direct from the turbo oil return and blasts it straight out of the exhaust hence the big plume of whiteish grey smoke there was a LR tech bulletin and a modification where a non return valve was fitted in the oil return which was also raised higher into the sump to stop oil being sucked back up. My 2010 3ltr RRS didn’t do it until it had a service then started. It only does it under heavy accel once on a long run, doesn’t do it pottering around cause the demand for the little turbo to spool up to cut down turbo lag isn’t required

hi

2.7 only has the one turbo , but alas if the turbo oil seals fails know it can cause a turbo runaway which is then a 5k bill for a new engine:eek:

one way to stop it quick is shove a rag to block off the air inlet. it have to be pretty dam quick

hope u don’t mind me saying but assume you’ve had urs resolved to ensure ur turbo seals are ok

That certainly looks like it, when mine started I found it would you believe on an Australian lr forum, seems it was a common problem in the hot climate, quite a. Number had turbos changed under warranty by dealers but still didn’t cure it until mod was done. Mine didn’t do it until it was serviced by stealers but coz I now drive like miss daisy I didn’t notice it for about six weeks by which time it was out of warranty, it did actually stop of it’s own accord which I can only presume was when the cold weather arrived and the oil thickened up a bit

sounds like u was very lucky in not having the turbo engine runaway

Hi thanks for both the offer and answers . I dont know about the egrs .not cleaned anything .and i dont use supermarket fuel .but it does seem to do it at revs above 2000rpm on acceleration its only done this maybe 3 times that ive noticed and temp wise its not really got much above 6c since ive noticed it .the smoke only lasts a second or two at most but is very heavy but then completely clear

ur very welcome

the turbo kicks in around 2,000 revs

reason i ask about temp is the fuel burner heater will kick in below 7c and i just wondered on the off chance ref the smoke but indeed not the case

indeed would get this in a garage and checked out, just for the what If regarding the turbo seals and better safe than sorry , they can then also check out the live data readings for the injectors

just need to rule out those turbo seals first as a precaution, not trying to worry u but at least then u will 100% know as these are expensive engines and things should never be ignored

it may just be a simple split hose but that would normally produce constant smoke, it’s the unknown

plse let us know how u get on

Might be worth having a look at the engine breather system of the cam covers into inlet, there has been talk of a pvr valve needing changing but may not be this engine as I am just trying to remember snippets of info.
