Hi guys, sorry if someone has already posted the answer to this. Bought a 3.0d L322 4 days ago 124k on clock. Everything seemed fine, gearbox changes were smooth. Today in slow moving traffic i lost all drive. I manully put it in to 2nd, bit of a clunk but no futher problems for 12 miles. When i was almost home trans failsafe came up. Left car for half an hour took it a drive, again when stopping at a junction, lost all drive. Switched engine off/on, got drive but not for long, just revs. Do i have the dreaded gearbox failure or is it a sensor fault. Thanks in advance

Can you take it back?
Get the codes read and if you can’t take it back you could try draining some fluid to see if it glitters.

Ive put it in for a diagnostic, hoping its a sensor, was through a forest track last night, hopefully its just something caught a cable/wire or low box oil. Gearbox is NOT making any crunching
 
There’s not a lot to crunch in an auto box really if it is similar to my ZF, there are lot of clutch plates though.
Could be the transfer box i guess, you have high , low and neutral to choose from and the motors do play up and the movement can get stuck in any position if not used regularly.

If you bought from a dealer, take it back as being unfit for purpose, repair or refund.
 
First thing I would do is check the gearbox oil level.

No experience of the TD6, and scant experience on auto box issues, all mine (in various cars over the years) have worked perfectly, although my petrol L322 did once play up with failsafe mode, but that was after towing a very heavy load but I recall a battery reset seemed to resolve it as it never returned.
Be aware that you have bought the one with chocolate box.

Hopefully it's an oil level issue, but as HC mentioned, the hilo actuator can become sticky.

Im hoping its the transfer box at the very worst, spoke to a 4x4 specialist today, hes thinking along the same lines, fingers crossed its not the gearbox
 
I admire your optimism but I’m afraid it’s much more likely to be your transmission playing up than the transfer box. Next time you lose drive put the gear selector into Park with the engine still running and the handbrake off and see if the park lock holds the vehicle. If the vehicle will roll with Park engaged then the problem lies with the transfer box, propshafts, final drives or driveshafts. If it locks the wheels and the car won’t move then you have a transmission fault.

When i had it off road and selected low, nothing lit up on dash, got hill descent to work. Im hoping its because its not been used in so long its slipping into N. Did approx 60 miles after then the fault developed. Its like its always in N when it happens. If i switch off the ignition and start it up again i get D or R for about 10 secs sometimes longer then it just revs. P lock is definitely not engaging when it happens. With a garage as we speak

Just got a call from garage, 4 fault codes, 1 being no communication between gearbox and transfer box, also hes not happy with the noise the gearbox makes when he can get it into drive, solenoid??
 
I bought mine from the other end of the country, my suspension lasted just up until i pulled onto my drive but mine was private.
There are hundreds of these private traders springing up buying the part exchange cars from garages, giving them a wash and selling them on.
All you can do is get your report and then at least you can go back to him armed with the evidence and then even if you keep it you can try and get some money back.
 
Seller is 400 miles away, ive notified them, basically now trying to say sold in good faith blah blah, i'll await the garages full report on the fault

Under the law you are covered for 6 months for engine and gearbox. Don't touch it. If unsure get legal advice from Citizens Advice Bureau or your insurance company. If it is the gearbox we are talking thousands.
 
You could try the transfer box calibration procedure but do it on your drive and when you don’t need to use it immanently, have a search as I can’t remember how to do it but not complicated
 
With leggy miles L322s I always think you might as well buy a spares or repair with a knackered gearbox that someone else has run out of money on. Like P38s the supposedly 'together' examples that command a premium all tend to get some of the usual issues six months down the line in any case.

If you have the space. Space is a premium for a lot of people.
