Now really frustrated and the overengineered L322 02-06 immobiliser is really cheesing me off as it has left me stranded. Can anyone give some assistance with fault diagnosis.

Sequence of events as follows:
1. Insert key and transponder coil recognises key successfully
2. Immobiliser ECU successfully sending unlock signal to Steering ECU
3. Steering Lock successfully unlocks and then relocks steering 3 times (hence not the usual issue as steering lock working)
4. No signal sent the ignition barrel solenoid to release the key, hence cannot turn past 1st position

I know all of this because I have already swapped out the ignition barrel and verified that the transponder coil/key works. Also have checked the ignition solenoid and that is working. The steering unlocking mechanism is working because I can hear it working.

My thoughts were it could be:
1. Steering lock sensor not working - hence why steering unlock/locks 3 times
2. Steering ECU gone hence why no signal to unlock ignition and steering unlocked 3 times
3. Communication issue between immobiliser and Steering ECU
4. Wiring with any of the above

Is there anyone out there with some specialist knowledge?? Otherwise I am in trouble because it means: new car, low loader to a specialist and a huge bill and someone getting a very cheap Range Rover. Sad because the rest of the car is in great nick.

I can't help with the techie stuff but as you say you you are stranded, try posting again in LZIR thread There may be someone near you able to help and answers to LZIR are usually answered smart quick. Good luck.

Thank you for the offer, very kind. The car is fortuitously outside the house. Just means the family isnt going anywhere

It sounds like the common steering lock fail, have you tried removing fuse 18 for 30 seconds or so and replacing it to see if it will allow the ignition to unlock ?
The other thing I did was to remove the steering column lower cover and unplugged the steering column ECU for again about 30 seconds and reconnected it, I would then wait to feel a click on the key in the ignition and it would start.
This will only work once per disconnect .
If this works then there are a number of cures for the problem some more temporary like fitting a switch to fuse 18 I think it is which is a bodge to stripping out the steering column and repairing the magnet in the lock solenoid or drilling the case and lubricating the solenoid .
Where are you at with it currently ?

Thanks for comments. All very helpful

To summarise the issue incase anyone suffers the same fate.
-Fuse 18 won't solve it
-Unplugging steering ECU to reset will not solve it
-Steering lock mechanism definitely working as it unlocks and locks shortly afterwards

SOLUTION: Replacement upper steering column

Hence could be either:
1) Scrambled steering ECU - which needed reflashing
2) More likely HALL-Effect sensor for the steering lock (explaining why the ECU repeatedly locked it).

If it is the sensor then you need to change out the whole column anyway so don't feel like I've lost too much spending an evening changing the column and £350 out of the back pocket.
