Just bought a 2000 4.6 Vogue, planning to have it LPG converted as I will be using it to pull an Ifor Williams HB510 horse trailer. I'm not crazy about losing the wheel-well or cargo space, anyone any advice? or suggestions, had heard about under belly tanks, does any one have any recommendations?

Have looked around but although there are a lot of companies offering conversions, there seems to be little comparison or review of the different systems and equipment.

I'm not under time pressure to do this, but would like to ensure I make a well informed decision when the time is right.

Any advice gratefully received

Hi - see these links: v8Dualfuel.com: LPG / Autogas conversions and Kits for the Rover V8 Engine
RPi Engineering - V8 Engines
NOT the cheapest conversion out there but no loss of boot space and you keep a full size petrol tank too (combined tanks should give you over 700 mile range). Let us know how it goes and where you get it done. I am looking to get it done next year (spent all my cash keeping my P38 in working order so far this year! But fuel cost has not been an issue while in the garage!)

if you want a trouble free system with excellent performance fit a
[ prins multi point sequential injection ]http://www.prinsautogasuk.co.uk/ not the cheapest by far ,expect to pay about £2000+ for a fitted system , avoid cheap systems being offered for £1000 you will regret it later and would have wasted you money
i have lost count the amount of crap systems ive seen and the way they have been cobbled together , open the bonnet and you find wires trailing everywhere
be carefull once you have paid your money and its fitted its to late:)

Thanks for the info Klf400 & Karl, I'd done some research and the brand Prins seems to keep coming up in a favorable light, along with BRC. Anyone any thoughts or experience of BRC?

I've been budgeting on £2K +/- £200, if I'm going to do it I want it done right. I'm not looking to get it done in the next month or so, more like September.

I will certainly keep people posted as to how it goes. I'm based in the S.Bristol area, does anyone have any strong recommendations about where to get it done, I'm more than happy to travel, using the right company is more important than distance I would prefer to use a company that has a good reputation from other peoples personal experience.

Cheers

Just emailed them for a quote...thanks for the pointer...did you use them?

I my be a purist or prophet of doom. but reading the amount of posts on here regarding LPG converted V8 P38's and the subsequent problems. I feel that conversion is just not worth the hassle.
If you want a V8, take it on the chin at each fill up (With Petrol) or get out of the kitchen if you can't stand the heat. OR buy a Diesel, which won't work out that much cheaper to run anyway especially if you are looking for V8 performance.
You should know that V8, P38 running costs are high so if that is not within your budget..look at another motor. Bit like wanting a Roller really with the same running costs as a Mini.
That will set the cat amongst the pigeons !!!!

TOTALLY AGGREE!!!!.......... I had a Disco V8 with LPG Trusted it with my life would NEVER go TITS UP on me

I now have a P38 ...... Would I convert it to LPG ????????

NOT A FOOKIN CHANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK Irish & HC..fair comments...

I'm not some Pikey looking to run his RR on used chip oil, I'm aware that there are a lot of dicey conversions/installers out there, thats why I'm asking people to give me the benefit of their experience so I can make an informed choice as to whether I have it done or not. I believe you get what you pay for, but equally there are a lot of people looking to separate you from your cash, if there's an option to reduce cost per mile, then I'd be daft to not consider it.

If you're going to tell me I'm a **** for thinking about having it done, then fair enough, but back your argument with some reasoning, tell me why you think its a dumb idea. If its not your cup of tea..hey then fair enough and good luck to you.

my TOTALLY HONEST thoughts on this....

I have had BOTH (Disco V8 WITH LPG) & (P38 WITHOUT LPG) ......now the Disco was (& is) a great car its has a V8 BUT VERY LITTLE ELECTRONICS ect Engine Temp is NOT critical nor is the Engine ECUs "problematical"

The P38 is TOTALLY reliant on its BeCM & all the other "Leccy Gizmos" that LR built into it.....

For THAT reason alone I would NEVER LPG a P38 .. IMHO IF you do your playin with Fire & will get BURNT........ I DO understand WHY people do it & more often than not they regret it because of the problems it causes ..........

The difference between the 2 (Disco & P38) Engines are "Minimal" but the "Control interfaces" are POLES APART ....You are askin an engine to burn a fuel it was NEVER designed to burn ....With a Disco 1 engine A few "Tweeks" here & there & you'll get away with it.............. With the SAME engine in the P38 BUT WITH ITS COMPLICATED BeCM .... "Tweekin" to make it work Just AINT AN OPTION ....

It'll turn round & bite yer ..... & BITE YER REAL HARD!!!!

Thanks for that, that's just the kind of information that I was looking for, I hadn't realised that there was such a difference between the two engines. I'm assuming that it's pretty much the same across the the years/models?

What I should be asking is - "Has anyone had a satisfactory P38 LPG conversion?"

Cheers

Hano

Don't listen to the naysayers! P38's run perfectly happily with decent lpg conversions. The engines are a bit fragile regardless of the fuel type so any problems encountered would likely have happened anyway.

The V8 used in the P38 is a direct descendant of the original so mechanically it's no different to that used in the Disco. The LPG ECU sorts out all the fueling. In fact the BECM has bugger all to do with the running of the engine in any case Keith!

Mine's been running on lpg for the past 60000 miles with no issues whatsoever as have a LOT of other P38s.

Thanks guys...

If you don't mind me asking what systems did you have fitted?? I haven't decided whether to go ahead or not, and I'll be the first person to admit that I know bugger all about Range Rovers...all my previous experience is with rather specialist Land Cruisers, G Wagons and of course Defenders, but as a user rather than with my head under the bonnet.

Thats why I'm asking all the questions, so that when I speak to an installer, I know the questions that I should be asking.

Is there a lot of difference between the models/years...or is it more a question of what is installed and by who? Can I ask you as well where you put the fuel tanks, is the spare wheel well the best option?

Hano

Keep asking. It's always good to find out as much as you can first.

I've got an OMVL multipoint sequential system in mine. It's not been fitted particulary neatly, but seems to work ok. It was already fitted when I bought the car and immediately had to have both injector blocks replaced, but they weren't very expensive. Other than that it's been fine.

My tank is in the spare wheel well, which is only irritating if you insist on carrying a spare around with you. A lot of people don't seem to bother. It's a 90 litre tank which I can get about 75 litres of lpg into.

Filling point is in the left hand towbar electrics cutout in the middle of the rear bumper so it doesn't matter which side the pump is to fill up from - something else to consider.

Mornin Guy .....Yeah what I ment by "BeCM" was the "General" Electrical "Gubbins" that P38's have .....EVERYTHING is channelled back thru them whereas in the 3.9EFI's they're not

Hi Hano,

I have a BRC multpoint sequential in mine and it has run perfectly on it for the last two years with no discernable difference in performance.
P38 4.6 30th Anniversary 2000

no ,mine was already converted when i bought it, but i did have a full safety inspection and service on the lpg system by gasotronics
however i do know three people who have had there vehicle converted by them , all where well impressed by the quality and service
while i was there i was able to view an ongoing installation also the company themselves run 2 p38s which have been converted and are more than willing to demonstrate:)

Thanks guys that's the sort of information that's useful to hear, first hand information and positive recommendation. I'm not in a hurry to do it, I'd planned to do it later in the year, after some research.

I've just bought a pretty much mint 2000 Vogue, which I must admit is purely a toy for me, I'm now on the backfoot slightly having to justify it and consider it for roles that I hadn't really planned on when I bought it, to keep the other half happy!

Thanks for the advice

Have a chat with Dom at Avon Autogas in Bedminster 0800 0717001, Ive just picked up my 4.6 P38 from him and it drives lovely, in fact I drove 130miles straight away without a hitch. Its an OMVL sequential system with a 90l tank in the spare wheel well, hes mounted the filler in the rear bumper and its nice and neat.
Tell him Steve from Riders recommended them.:)
