Hi guys,

Today I started a job I'd wish I hadn't... After what was meant to be a simple timing belt change has turned into a fiasco.

Anyhow, as the title suggests I have oil inside the timing belt housing and it's fresh oil. Would anyone be able to tell me what the cause could be?

Hi Steve, thank you for your response.

Where would I find these seals? I've got a 200 tdi from a discovery. Just want to make double sure I get the right parts. Also is Dayco a good replacement for belts?
 
Dayco are the factory fit OEM - those and Gates are all I will fit.

Oil in the timing case is almost certainly the crank oil seal - but, as mentioned, it is prudent to do the cam as well whilst you are in there ... if the crank seal is "that" old, then the cam seal has to be nearly the same age, and thus close to failure ....;)

My personal preference for LR seals are Corteco - in fact, it is all I will fit as I have bitten too often by sh*t ones :rolleyes: - they are marginally more expensive, but well worth it IMHO.
 
Amazing, you guys sure know your stuff! Every time I carry out a maintenance sweep I find out something new!

Before I attempt to remove the timing pulleys is there anything I should know regarding setting the timing? I have got a timing pin in the fuel pump and flywheel and set the mark on the cam pulley with the casing. If I take the pulleys off to replace the seal how do I know where to put the pulleys back on for timing, or is it as simple as taking off and putting back on to the mark?

Crank pulley is keyed, sometimes the gear just slides off, other times you need a puller, they are not massively seized just stubborn, threads in gear are M5.
Did my cam seal a few months back on mine and for life the of me I cannot remember if keyed or not!

This is one of the issues of old cars, one job leads to another, and if you keep the car long enough you get the fun of doing it all over again!
 
Perfect thanks guys, I've looked online but again I'm struggling with part numbers. I had a look at corteco but can't find a supplier and they don't supply the front and rear crank seal on their website.

I looked on turner engineering too and had the same results. The only ones that seem to do them is bearmach but again I can't confirm if they are the correct ones?

Would I be correct in thinking that the crank oil seal is the same seal used for the from casing as well?
 
Thank you all so much, I think I've accumulated the info I need from you guys, the following seals are for a discovery 200 tdi:

Crank seal Product Number: ERR6490
Camshaft seal Product Number:ETC5064
Timing Case dust seal: ETC4154

I've just got round to changing everything over, all the seals are done and the timing is all set.
However I'm not too sure I've done it correctly. When I crank the engine over (by hand) it feels really stiff, is this normal?

When I set the timing for the pump it was quite difficult to move the pulley enough to get the pin in, like I was forcing against a spring...

Is this all normal? I've turned the engine over 4 times and everything lines up perfectly and the fuel pump pin too...
