I got a very similar problem with my 300tdi disco, mine is using a fair bit of water two, was think about doing the HG next week, will be keeping an eye this thread to see what everyone says?

Sounds like piston rings or as already said, dodgy injector.

My money's on piston rings.

I dont wana hear that sorta talk!
I have a nasty feeling my trouble start after I sank it on Salisbury plain, and Ive put a new set of injectors in mine already, Although I have to say mines easy to start, fires up after straight away, but feels very under powered?

What's the symptoms of yours ?, is using oil or just water and lack of power.

It uses a little oil, not to much tho, uses more water and has lack of power, shes starting ok even running part veg (50/50) on a frosty morning, although I havent used any Veg for the last few tanks Ive put through it? when she does start first thing in the morning or if left outside work all day, shes lumpy as hell and more under powered than when shes warmed up, no lumpyness when warm at all?? Smokes a fair bit on cold start, but again no really smoke when warm, only a little black smoke when pushed hard up a hill, thinking about having the head off, was thinking valve guides/Stem seals? Unless you chaps think of something else?

mine and 109 partys mates one also starts up fine doesn't use any more water than it should today we where thinking that it could be the stem seals haven't bedded in properly yet as they are proper genuine land rover ones or shouldn't this make any difference? and it is still burning a little oil by the smell of the smoke untill it has been run for a few minutes when it then turns to the usual black smoke when revved and clear when at constant revs

Sounds like a bent valve to me.:(

Thats exactly what I was thinking Ratty, head coming off this week! Any tips on doing a head overhaul? is there much difference between the cheaper head gasket sets and the more expensive ones?

keep clear of britpart. Don't forget to fit a new cambelt while yer at it. It's a landrover so expect it to take 3 times longer than it should. If you expect it to take longer it'll be quicker. If you expect it to be a quick job it'll take longer.

i did the cam belt about 6months ago, so should be ok, I used a genuine LR one.
