Does anyone know is it a given that I will have bent valves / push rod damage due to timing belt breaking during driving or will I get away with just replacing the belt etc and setting up the timing again. Engine is a 1996 2.5na.

its likely but not given

OK thanks probably best take the head off and check / recon then - just realised I put 1996 when its an 1986.

you dont have to take head off to remove push rods, slacken tappet adjuster right off and turn engine over till each rod in turn is at its lowest

Just noticed I put 96 when its an 86!

With the tappet rail off put a straight edge across valve upper ends if all level valves should be ok ie no valve stuck downwards.

Just check the push rods first before you remove the head, they often bend first.

You may be lucky and just need pushrods and a belt, the NA is a pretty tough engine tbh.

What a weekend took the head off as looked like one of the valves was sticking. Once off 6 of the push rods were bent but the valves seemed OK. I replaced all valves and push rods anyway. When tensioning the new timing belt the injector pump started leaking diesel through the shaft to the timing pully, took pump off and got a diesel engineer to check it they fitted a new seal and said the old one had gone hard with age -maybe that was why the belt snapped if it was getting diesel leaking on it. Got it all back on and set the timing then turned engine by hand to start valve clearances and valve was hitting piston aarhh. After checking everything again I had misread the manual and lined up the woodruf key on the crankshaft (as 300tdi) with the arrow instead of the dot on the gear. No damage though so re set the timing again and put all back together then set the tappets. All turned over fine.
Then got all fuel system / cooling etc back on and was filling with coolant and it started just leaking water from the head at approx No 3 piston on the exhaust side. Took head back off to find that I had put the gasket on upside down I think ???? the Landrover manual states the word DIESEL on the gasket should face up which I did, but when doing this the gasket is then the opposite way up from the old one I removed. Can anyone explain what way up the gasket should go? I have some photos to try and show more clearly but cannot figure out how to show them here.

Just read some old posts - I have definitely put gasket in upside down.

Lol, I've had nightmares putting head back on before. Learning the hard way. Ultimately with the gasket I made sure all the holes corresponded to the block so I wasn't blocking any passages.

Ha ha yes lesson learnt do not get too engrossed in following the manual, common sense and consulting Landyzone will prevail. Still you learn quicker by going through mistakes. Had the head back off in less than an hour. Will put all back together next weekend now hopefully the head gasket will be ok as engine was not started.

Yes although it was only torqued down for about an hour or so before I took it off again.
Been running fine for 3 months now.
